"I'm now on my third Mefo front and sixth or seventh rear. Great do-it-all tires!

My first front Mefo I dutifully mounted as indicated by the direction arrow. It lasted about 6K miles and was terribly cupped - to the point of being dangerous - at that mileage."

Since this is my first set of Mefos I did not know better than to mount them "the factory" way. I do not have that many miles on them so I will just pull the front one and mount it backwards - now that is a first; mount a tire backwards on purpose - done it a few times to practice mounting tires - LOL

Where can I get the opaque black windscreen/rally fairing that is on so many of the Dakar models?

...I got from Hammersley BMW (part numbers are one different for the black and clear screens - and they are different after 2004 or 2005 with four screws instead of the earlier three).

Damn, I don't think I can get Mefos in Japan but they sound exactly like what I need. The Anakees I'm running are great for commuting but not much good offroad to put it politely :evil

    fritzmovies,

Any problems fitting the Acerbis handguards. I was thinking of the same handguards but it looks like the front brake line will be in the way. Any tricks, or do they just go on?

    Looks good by the way.

Best looking dakar I've ever seen. My dad has been talking about getting one of these for years and got on my case when I bought a 650 Xcountry. Anyone have both or ridden both extensively and want to comment? We are both 95% street, 5% dirt. He thinks he's 40% dirt but he hasn't been for 20 years.

there's quite a bit of room with the mounting bracket to accommodate the brake line. Only mod I had to do was to have the bar end weights cut down to 20mm or so otherwise the Acerbis guards won't fit. Clutch & brake levers just fit inside the guards with the 20mm bar end weights so I wouldn't get rid of them altogether. I had a local mechanic cut them down on his lathe and then I painted them with Tremclad semi-gloss enamel along with the instrument panel & signal light housings.

It now has a windscreen and a little 200 mile test trip. Working on rear rack on/off attachment as we speak. Thanks I will try to keep you posted.

I'd say the Dakar winds hands down with that tarmac/dirt ratio if having a 17 liter fuel tank, hard luggage and decent wind protection are important factors.

2002 stock with 19,680. No ABS or heated grips. Center stand added by PO. I just added the Wunderlich Low Ergo Saddle I bought from another inmate. Mucho more on the way.

That looks awesome, and comfy. Does it restrict aggressive dirt riding? How much did that set you back if you don't mind me asking.
