We spent two days riding dirt bikes on all the trails where I learned to ride. It was a wonderful time spent with my family.

With the sun setting around 3:00 PM in these northern parts. an early start has to be made for sunset photos. But diligence pays off. After a long series of shots before the sun got below the horizon, these were the aftereffects. Here, the sun's rays illuminate the atmosphere just above the horizon. Distant mountains appear to have topknots. These are an example of Fata Morgana, a mirage caused by temperature inversions, with dense cold air under a layer of much warmer air.

A better rendering of the Fata Morgana, widespread along the mountains with temperatures at lower elevations running 30 to 40 below zero F.

Got the idea of shooting directly at the setting sun from Dave6253. Still nowhere near as good as his, but improving... a little at a time.
