Lithium-Ion batteries

    Apple lap-top computers and Boeing have had fire problems with these batteries. I am about to replace my battery in a 2011 BMW R1200 GSA and I have looked at these types of batteries. Should I rule them out and stick with the recommended batteries. Can anyone with experience here shed some light on this?

    If it turns out that the battery fires are related to the recharging system then I worry that the BMW generator was set up to charge the recommended batteries and not Lithium-Ion. My understanding is that a new charger needs to be bought for the Lithium-Ion batteries so perhaps the specs on the charging flow to the mounted battery may need adjusting as well. I have not heard of any fires related to motorcycle batteries however but they are fairly new in this area.

    I don't know about the Boeing batteries but, I understand that LiFePo automotive batteries need a charging profile not provided by the BMW motorcycle electrical system. And while these LiFePo batteries are capable of outrageous current delivery, until BMW (and others like Roger) say that the BMW alternator and rectifier/regulator are compatible with LiFePo batteries, I'll stick with a quality AGM battery for my GS.

    +1, I use these types of batteries in R/C aircraft. The chargers/balancers are very specialized.

    I have been thinking the same thing lately with all the Boeing news. I honestly don't know if they are a good idea or not especially when they are so expensive. They do have electronics in them though to make them compatible with a normal charging system and balance the cells. Course you have to trust that the manufacturer got it right or your bike is history. Definitely wouldn't be going for the cheaper no name ebay ones. Not convinced the odesey batteries are worth the extra either. They seem a bit more reliable but not that much more.

    Plus if it does blow up or catch fire it's only near your package and the fuel tank.

    A friend of mine almost burned his house down when RC batteries that were charging caught fire in his garage. Luckily his son was visiting at the time and was in the guest room next to the garage and smelled it.

    You have all confirmed my thoughts and I do believe.....The pioneers get the arrows!....I think it wise to remain with more conventional batteries until some of the questions are resolved. A toasted package is not a good thing!!

    I also use Li-ions in some high performance EDF aircraft and even though I have not had an issue with one I have heard of them burning down houses and even cars, I always recharge mine in an old ammo box with the lid down and latched.

    That along with the problems with Li-ions on the new 787 and they've been the cause of two air freighter crashes makes me very leery to pony up all that dough and slap one in a bike that's electrical system was not designed for Lithium batteries, I also fail to see any cost/benefit.
    I buy my GS batteries at Walmart simply due to the logistics of a warranty claim should it ever fail to start my bike, which is all I need the battery to do.

    I used to build LiIon batteries for the aerospace market. I would not install any one of the current crop of commercial LiIon batteries into my bike. The charging systems we've got are designed around Lead-Acid, which are vastly more tolerant of abuse than any LiIon chemistry available. Even the relatively forgiving Iron Phosphate variants don't match up well with our charging systems. I would wait until batteries with dedicated charge control electronics positioned between the charging system and the cells are on the market.

    I have had to pull mine back out of the GSA because it will barely crank it over in the cold. I am actually getting a full refund so no harm no foul.

    It was 7 degrees this morning when I started my bike to go to work. The Odyssey battery I've got didn't like it, but the motor did eventually fire (after the voltage dipped low enough to reset my RID clock).

    That is exactly what mine does even in 30 degree weather. I can't help but think that it isn't real good on the starter or the electronics.

    Tomorrow is supposed to be colder, we're expecting -3, I've got my booster pack on the charger now. I won't even try to crank the motor without the extra (and warm) capacity on the system.

    For lithium-ion batteries to work, the charging controller has to be built into the battery as no BMW bike (that I know of) has a charging controller.

    Well, that's enough information for me to stay clear of LiFePo as engine start batteries.

    Now as for R/C airplanes? I might give that a try but I still like big glow engines for R/C flying...I guess the sounds of a well adjusted Schnuerle ported or PDP glow engine at takeoff is just too compelling...Hey, now maybe I'm understanding why some folks like aftermarket, loud exhaust on their boxer? I don't think so.
