I truly hate to do this, but I am too overwhelmed with choices! I do trust my ADV InMates and thought I would give the whole world a shot.

Current Past Ride: 1999 Suzuki Bandit 1200S Adventure Style

Rule #1 in my house is : Only 1 Bike in the garage at any given moment.

I truly commute the better of 365 days out of the year. 99.1% is on asphalt.
Enjoy long trips and i have a pillon maybe 20 days out of the 365.

On the Bandit my wife sat higher than I did. She did not like it. I am looking for a little more wind protection. Standard to Relax sitting position.

Bikes considering are as follow: BMW R1100RS, BMW K1100LT, Honda ST1100, Vstrom DL1000, BMW 1150RT, Triumph Tiger, Aprilia Pegaso 650, Honda Pacific Coast, FJR

For years I thought I wanted a ZG 1000 Concours, sat on one, and felt cramped up.
Today I came across a Kawasaki ZZR1200 with corbin seat, corbin beettle bags, and concours 1400 handle bars. Wow almost like an FJR. Really comfortable and different at the same time.

So...any input that I can get (I know i am really asking for it) will help.

Bios: I am 5 ft 10 in. about 230 lbs give or take 5 and a 32 inseam.
I have between $3k to $4k to spend.
I don't mind high mileage bikes....I like bikes that look different

Here are some pictures of the 2004 Kawi ZZR1200

I thought it was a very nice setup next to the Burgundy FJR. By looking at the corbin seat, looks like my wife would sit a bit higher than me, similar than the Bandit. She would like to be a little more at the same level as I.

just wandering...how foward is your blackbird.....

that ZZR was 2004, with 20,000 miles...they were asking at the dealer 5499...

You seem to know what you're looking for and have some good bikes picked out there.

Me personally I would stay away from BMW, they tend to be expensive and difficult to repair if something breaks.

And I would stay away from the Pegaso (too small and weak) and the Triumph Tiger (bad wind protection).

I'd look at Honda ST1100, Vstrom DL1000, Honda Pacific Coast, FJR.

Or if you can afford it a ST1300 is very, very nice and lasts forever.

Also - not very sexy but very practical is the honda deauville, it often rates in the top five for owner satisfaction!

Otherwise that Kwak does look tempting...

Forget european bikes.Forget Beemers and Triumph. Too expensive, not enough dealers.

IMO Corbin bags are hideous and their seats are atrociousÂ… But I really like the rest of that bike. :nod

Thanks for the input. Looked at the KAWI and they are asking 5,400. A bit out of my range. I am in Charlotte if anyone is interested. Still looking. There are a couple of concours in my area at my price point. Anybody that is 5'10 and 230lbs. That is riding one out there? And how do you keep from feeling all cramped up in such a bike.

Definately following this thread as you have seem to have the same needs as I do. I'm the same height as well, just a little lighter(185lbs w/o gear). I'm seriously considering a 2000 R1100RT, 69k miles, 3 piece luggage, looks like a rusell saddle for $3500 after negotiating......just a bit far from home being $3500 is the end of my budget(supposed to be 3k and under), but it's just so much bike.

Found what sounds like a nice ST1100 but it's either sold, or owner doesn't feel like contacting me.....darn CL.

I test rode an FJR 1300 Yam a few years back. It was awful. The bike was stalling in traffic, the clutch was like an on/off switch and the damn thing just about fried me to death. No match for a Honda ST1300 V4.

OOPS Sorry, I missed the budget part. The Harley below is out, but otherwise meets your requirements.

Assuming you aren't off-roading, because your thread is in the road warriors section. Harley just came out with a new version of the Dyna platform named the Switchback. It appears to meet your requirements.

    Harley Propaganda:

A union of opposites that sacrifices nothing, the Switchback's modern styling brings vintage Harley-Davidson simplicity to today’s roads in a look that defines classic: both true to its roots and completely contemporary. And with its detachable windshield and saddlebags, it's like having two bikes in one: a powerful, head-turning street cruiser that can also go the distance as a comfortable, easy-handling tourer.

I'm in your situation with only having one bike in the garage at a time and can understand the frustration of getting to pick only just one. Don't be put off by BMW R-bikes with boxer engines. They're super easy to maintain and have tons of support. I'm in the LKN area and have an R1100S (14K miles) that will be for sale soon... as soon as I find a replacement, and I'm still looking.

BTW: I have a 32" inseam and can flat foot the R11S.

Pretty sure the new switchback doesn't fit into the $3-4k budget.

Off to see if I can find anyone giving away a vstrom.....
