Looking for other Suzuki XF650 Freewind Riders

    I'm a proud new owner of a Suzuki XF650 Freewind adventure bike and I'm looking for anyone with insight into good accessories and mods.

    I have a suzuki freewind md. 1998 and I have 62245 km with this bike.

    for my bike i change windshild, crashbar from hepco&beker, sidecase the same craschbar

    Hey.

    Been riding my Suzuki XF650 Freewind for over 5 years now. It is a good, solid bike, that´s easy to service. I have done all the service myself, and I´m no mechanic. I have done some upgrade on mine:

    - Higher windshield. The best modification and a "must do" if you ride over 80-90 km/h most of the time.
    - Heat grips. Nice if you live at the west coast of Norway. (I am Danish, but live here because of love :evil)
    - Acerbis handgards.
    - Acerbis neopren fork-protection
    - Leo Vince X3 exhaust. Gives a bit more power and a lot more noise.....brumm brumm :wink:
    - Hepco & Becker crash bar.
    - Panniers from Givi
    - Acerbis frontfender. The original broke during some offroading.
    - A watch + temp. Funny they diddent put a watch in that large display!?!
    - A center stand

    I have also tried out different tires. First up was the Pirelli MT 80. Good tires. Then Pirelli MT 60 good, but do not last that long. Pirelli MT 90, Good and long lasting. Then Dunlop Trailmax. NOT RECOMMENDEBLE! Been fitting Mitas 07 adventure the last 3 times and they make a very good mix with the Freewind, although I´m not that impressed with the front tire. But you can live with it. Thinking about trying Heidenau k60 next time.

    Fitted a DR650 front wheel for the "knarlier" rides. Biggest hassle was finding a front fender / mud guard. High mount options seem to interfer with the oil cooler so ended up fitting one off TF125 Mud Bug (farm bike), direct to the raised fork brace. Doesn't look pretty but it works.

    I've been riding the XF650 Freewind all season for 5 year now.
    I become more and more confident with it, but is lacking some power and sits a bit low.

    Modifications and comments:
    *************************************
    Bash plate of aluminium (Biltema, made from big sheet of "diamond aluminium". no longer for sale :/ )

    Crash Bars : Hepco & Becker . (These does NOT withstand a "proper" crash; the Front dampers touches the front upper mounting points after the crash , reducing the turn radius to "Tarmac only". Due to no welder i opted for a rod (and nuts) , and a hole. (se pic). Worked .. until next crash (yesterday!).

    Denali LED-lights. Works (!) not tried the fog-lens. The original light is not adequate (sp.?) for winter conditions.

    Main Stand : Should have been issued in the first place. Also equipped with the same aluminium-plate .

    Handlebar (Biltema) Was needed after a tarmac highside due to oil on the road. Bike filtered through the crashguard.

    Bar-riser (Biltema) .Didn't know I needed those ,until I bought them

    Temp/Clock (Biltema): Why on earth didn't they provide that in the intstrument-cluster?

    Hand-warmers (Biltema) : Kept the outer-leather of my gloves warm at winter. Fingers still frozen , so no fault finding has been done when they stopped to work. Also expands so the throttle wouldn't go off. inconvenient.

    Insulated Carburettor for winter riding: some floormat leftover from the minibus ziptied to the Carb.

    CRD Exhaust. Makes noise, especially without the dB-killer. To loud for my neighbourhood with that , but I'll bring along a insex "if needed" .

    Two small soft bags, camera-sized is ziptied to the handlebar, instead of a tankbag.

    2 x 12V outlet : Made from cutting board , Marine 12V output, and some "Carbon racing look" sticker . A relay and a fuse and some wires.

    Barkbusters : Biltema again.

    For non-scandinavians: Biltema is comparable to Wallmart; "bugdetstyle"


    It's not easy to find of the shelves accesoires for the Freewind. Be prepared to modify DR650 parts, or manufacturing yourself.

    Selfmade front fender of epoxy (bought at .. Biltema) .

    Oilcooler guard : aluminium mesh for car styling , still Biltema . (Saw XF650 have used the same trick)

    Front damper guard : Biltema .. some sort of Neoprene socks. works!

    I have had my freewind for just over one year and used it to travel 5300kms around Europe in sept of 2011.

    One problem, oil leak from top end... Corner only a weep..

    Mods, only chain oiler hand guards and a 12v socket. Oh and mefo tyres. Oh wait, exhaust has been changed and jetted too. Exhaust system is from a ccm.

    Looking to change the front forks, headlights and rear shock.

    I have an opportunity to pick up a used Freewind here in Mexico but it needs a gas tank. Does anyone know if the aftermarket IMS or Clarke gas tanks that fit the DR650 will also fit the Freewind?

    Does anybody knows where is the air/fuel carb fuel screw located on Freewind?
    I wondering I got little hiccups under 2000rpm what could it be?

    I see there's a Freewind and a DR650SE in this picture. Is there any chance the Freewind's engine guard would bolt onto the DR650? Also, would the Hepco Becker crash bars bolt onto the DR650? I'm just trying to determine if there are more engine guard and crash bar options for the DR650. Thanks.

    looks like the freewind uses a different/center oil cooler than the dr so i'm thinking no.

    i have an ims tank and the way it sits out the engine never even gets close to hitting the ground however and the oil cooler has a beefy guard.

    My freewind has been an unbelievable bike. I rode to work and back and around New Zeakand for 7years. gave it a clean up, shipped it capetown and bashed it through Africa for 4months. blew the shock out 3 times, man it brutal in northern Kenya. fixed the shock with a $2 seal from a shop in Ethiopia. Irode it for another 10000 in europe. Am riding it to work and back again in NZ.
    when it landed back in NZ I changed the oil before riding it and a bolt fell out. turns out it is from neutral light switch. unbelievable!!!. I lock tite the bolt back in and away we went. (be all over if it happened in the saraha in Sudan)
    apparently it is not uncommon so might pay to check it out. My freewind had 81000 ks when the bolt fell out.
    An hour and and a new clutch cover gasket all fixed.

    Just bought one today,well a 1/3 deposit down for a Suzuki XF650 Freewind with a low
    10.000mls on the clock-hasn't been used in 6yrs(dry storage).
    Got plenty plans before my trip to the East of Europe(the cheap end:rofl).
    Renthals first(may need bar risers),Hepco Becker 'rails' for my Makuba alu.
    boxes,a DR650 'big bore' FMF header,a Leo Vinci carbon can that i have-will need the
    mid section specially made.
    It already comes with a Scottoiler and handguards,i'm going to make my own aluminium
    sump guard.That horrid rear wheel cover is getting junked,and as the suspension has
    been lowered,it's getting 'jacked up' as to 'quicken' the steering-i'm used to supermotos!

    So the change over has begun to convert into a trailbike/adventure tourer.
    Firstly,raise the rear suspension.I found a pair of 'dog bones' on German
    eBay,ordered Monday,arrived Thursday-great service!
    While fitting them,i remover that horrid wheel shield and ugly sump thing!
    What a difference 3 little changes make........next a Pro Taper bar swap!

    Ended up with a set of Renthal 'Fatbars' instead that came F.O.C with a pair of ex-CCM 644 wheels
    i bought for my old Maico 320 moto x bike!
    Bought a pair of RFX oversize bar mount for a Honda CR/Kawasaki KX.......

    Being M12 mounting bolts,i proceeded to drill/Dremel out for M10......
