Basically I'd like to know what the "best year" would be..

I read somewhere that it's the '03 model. I have no idea if it's true or if the year makes a difference. I'm looking at an '02 right now and would like to know if I can find any more info on the updates made from year to year on the model..

The '03 has the following "improvements"... which is debatable, as I wouldn't really complain too much if I was "forced" to ride a '02 and earlier.

High flow head. (About 5-6 more HP/TQ... depending on what you read)
    Cam to accommodate the head.
    Second counter-balancer on camshaft.
    Larger diameter collector.
Elimination of the separate cross-over pipe.
    Higher flow oil pumps.
    Oil level sight glass.
    Change in swingarm "beams".
Easier to service second filter. (This change occurred in mid '01)
Larger diameter frame filler bolt. (A wonderful thing... really)
10A un-switched powerlet plug in dash.
    "Comfort" seat. :lol3
Fuse block relocated to battery area from fairing area... along with changes in wiring loom to accommodate this.
Tank decals beneath the clear coat... bastards. :fitz

'04 Adventure: (Not available in the US, unless you "grey'd" one in)
950 Adventure front fork, low fender, brakes... and kinda "soft" wheel rims.
    Very snazzy orange paint.

'05 Adventure: (Approximately 200 imported into the US)
Brake pedal changed to a folding type.
Reduced fuel capacity. (About a gallon?)
Second oil jet to cool underside of piston.
Some kind of big honkin' air system that I haven't seen in person yet but I hear it's not too hard to remove.
    Even snazzier orange paint.

That's all I got off the top of my head... and I could be wrong. :evil
    Anyone else got anything?

Yup, you forgot that the '03 model was only sold to the most discerning riders, those thought by the manufacturer to be worthy of the "best of the breed" :1drink

I had a choice... A $500 difference. A little research later, and you know the rest.

Shit... would you believe I forgot two of the most useful and nifty things?

    '03 and later:

    Hydraulically actuated clutch (Magura)
An "easy-up" foot pad on the centerstand. (so fabulous that Meat made a bunch of DIY weld-ons that sold like hotcakes. :nod)

OK... I think that's it this time.

Come to think of it... it was Passmore. Sorry Passmore for not giving credit where due.

    Well, almost Creep.

    '03 and later
High/Low octane ignition system and a very non-KTM/orange colour scheme; sort of glacier blue.

And when did the TPS throttle sensor thing start?

    Are we getting close?

I thought the "brown wire" ignition retard system was an earlier thang....

And I figured the '03 colour was silver. Maybe the light in the southern hemisphere tints it blue (via the inverted coriolis effect).....

Huh... my '03 brochure book, which I took a look at this morning, said 20% higher flow rates. "Course, KTM is not known for its accuracy or consistency.

Ignition... yep, the particular Kokusan digital with TPS and the world famous "brown wire" did also appear in 2003. I should know this; I mentioned it in a thread a week ago.

That's what I get for using my memory at 10:30 at night. And now I'm using my memory 25 minutes after I got out of bed... so that may be a bust too. :tb

After reading all the posts to this thread.. I am reconsidering getting this clean low mileage '02 for $5,600. It seems if I wait a little longer I might be able to find an '03 for a similar price... I do though prefer the paint scheme of the '02 though..

Am I correct that all '03s are silver?

Sounds good. I ended up with my '02 when I couldn't find an '01 LC4E anywhere. I've ridden a buddies '03 Adventure and it does seem an itsy teeny weeny bit smoother and the hydro clutch is nice, but other than that, it really wasn't that much different once in the saddle and riding.

So if you can get an '02 at a good price, I'd get it while you can and start enjoying it. Of course, if you can stand to wait (for who knows how long) on an 03+, then go for it.
