10 months and 13 days after he should have died in a horrible motorcycle accident, a friend checked out today from a torn aorta, most likely the result of injuries sustained in his accident.

May 5th, he was out for the first time on a chopper he had bought 3 weeks earlier. 20 yr old jackwad, stoned out of his gourd on pot, hauling a load of pot to a MMJ facility crossed a double yellow and hit Mike head on. He spent 2 months and 17 days in the hospital, a month of that time in a coma.

His injuries and the surgeries that followed set local, state and national records for severity, and that he survived. He was almost given last rites in the ER, several specialists called in that afternoon said they thought they were working on a dead man, no one expected him to survive the surgeries.

Since being released July 22nd, he's twice battled MRSA infections, had 8 follow up surgeries, and spent a few odds and ends weeks in the hospital for various reasons. He was finally coming to grips with some things, in that some of his pain would never go away but that he would persevere. Through the strength, prayers and encouragement of friends he was persevered, recently he started dating a woman that truly loved him and was hoping to be with him forever. In fact Sunday morning she posted on FB, that they had decided that morning to repaint some rooms in his house and were heading the Home Depot. The next post a couple hours later, they were in the ER.

The jackwad that hit him has not been convicted, nor has he accepted responsibility for his actions, criminally or civilly. Hopefully, the court will now throw the book at him and put him under the jail. This kid was so stoned, he had no idea he hit Mike, and couldn't understand why his car wouldn't start or move. Witnesses had to forcibly stop him from trying to move his car.

Mike had accepted that he would probably never ride a 2 wheeled cycle again, and had actually joked a few times about building a badass 3-wheeler just to give the middle finger to anyone who doubted him.

He leaves behind an ex-wife and 3 kids, as well as a lot of friends and a lovely girlfriend.

RIP Mike Streek Arko, you will be missed by so many.

I am always saddened by a life cut short, motorcycle accident or not, and am so sorry for your loss. I have lost more than a few family members and friends to the sport. It is a dangerous sport, compounded by the inattentive. Hopefully people will wake up.

Washington State just approved the public use of MJ. So now it is legal and much harder for law enforcement to detect. Before becomeing legal, use could detect THC in blood stream up to 30 days, so you were breaking the law period. YEA for those that voted in this manslaughter. Booze was bad enough.

    sorry for your loss.

they can and do indict a person for vehicular manslaughter (or similar based on state law) if the fatal injury is proven to have been caused by the accident.

Sorry to hear about your friend. It always saddens/angers me hear about things like this. I was a LEO (Military Police) for 7 years and I had to work a fatal crash involving an armored Humvee and an 18-wheeler that has stayed with me to this day. Driver of the 18-wheeler was high on meth and killed 2 of my brother soldiers and severely wounded and permanently changed the lives of 2 others. The armored Humvee was completely crushed, I mean it looked like a beer can that somebody stomped on. Hopefully this guy gets what he deserves and goes to jail for a really long time. I personally feel that situations like this should be open to the death penalty. That would do more than anything else to discourage people from driving while drunk/high.

the legal or not legal availability would not stopped the bad decision to drive, many alcoholics have proved that. In most states there are laws to deal with driving impaired. I know of more lost to dunks than stoners. I am against driving while impared, from alcohol, pot, other recreational substances, cell phones etc.

God speed to your friend, and good thoughts to his family

As soon as I read the title, I knew I would be reading about a road accident.

So sorry to hear about your friend. It's a shame to have died like that, especially when the accident wasn't his fault.

Vehicles have gotten way too big, and drivers pilot them distracted far too often. It is for this very reason that I have resolved, at the age of 54, to do most of my riding off-road. If I get hurt, it's because I did something myself; no-one else to blame. I prefer it that way...

    Again - may he RIP.

From what you've written of your friend, let may say he lived a victorious life in that, your friend DID not allow any injuries hold him back.

I can only hope that the person, who drove stoned and caused your friends death. Will be brought to some justice.

I just started RIDING myself. This past April, I purchased a V-Strom 650, and since I started contracting, again, I left my bike in storage. I want to RIDE.

May GOD bless you and your friends family members.

Some times it's better to die young , than to endure the horrors of old age.
Especially, if you make it to the other side.

Very sad, sorry for your loss.

The human body is miraculous in its workings and ability to repair itself but it's also incredible fragile when you think about it.
