    >From shelter cove hike south about 2 miles along the beach. There is an old aircraft carcass among the sand crabs.

Cool. Looks like no one got killed either:

    Over 40 = yup
    delicious beer = yup
    delicious beef = yup
Poutine = The greatest thing to ever come out of Canada. French Fries covered with gravy and cheese curds.

    > Get the shelter cove motel and call it the price of good living.

    I'd love to. $180+tax x 3 nights = not going to happen.

    > No moto van or staging, thems for city slickers

If I rode to the Lost Coast I'd have to do 2 valve adjustments on the way. I've got one of them finicky orange bikes.

    >At night we lay our head on the ground and watch stars.

With you 100% there, but I'm still a decade away from retiring. Once that happens I'll switch from little bike to big bike.

I really like the idea of doing a cb500x adventure bike conversion:

The 4th of July party at Shelter Cove is nothing if not loud and lively, wheelie contest on beach, lots of explosions/drunken bufoonery.

Great Tidepool s to check out right at the cove.

Plenty of comfortable camping close to food and showers,if a person cant camp there, they cant camp.

The place we are staying is about 3 miles up the road from Bear River Ridge Road.

    >"44 miles to the lighthouse:"

The last road is usually known as 'Windy Point' road.
Take the 'Lighthouse road' to the Mattole Beach Campground.

Couple hundred yards east of the campground, take the
road heading (south) up the bluff. On a nice day, there are lots of
    'camera views' from the road.

Continue up the road to a fork. Right hand fork (dual rut) leads
down through a gate (open in summer). It goes down to
a cabin (sheepherders cabin) on the beach.

Punta Gorda light is a very short walk south from the cabin.
On a nice day... awesome place.

The Windy Point main road goes up a bit further to private property.

Rode the 'Lost Coast' this weekend.

Windy Point road - good, but the downhill road to the beach is pretty loose for a beginning rider.

Usal Road - Good, not a lot of dust. North Half of the road has
a few ruts (not big ones though). South half of the road is pretty 'flat'. Good road for a new dirt rider. 25 miles.

The east end of Monument (i.e. Bear River) has log trucks coming down.
So be careful going up that road.

Avenue of the Giants was pretty empty.
Fog on the beach, sunny inland.

Thank you for the road condition update!

We've got 3 days of Lost Coast riding planned, about 90-100 miles per day.

Staged out of Shelter Cove RV/Campground this weekend. Good center of the Lost Coast, rode north on day 1 and south on Day 2. Definitely going back for some more exploring.

Shelter Cove feels a bit like the fictional Cicely, Alaska from Northern Exposure. For California it's pretty isolated. Campground shares land with the landing strip and "golf course" and baseball field that's really mostly a deer grazing and gopher farm. One Cessna had to circle the strip a couple times until the deer moved off.

And if you're towing anything make sure your braking skills are up to snuff. It's 6-8 miles of 10%+ downgrade with 180° switchbacks. Exciting...

    Tide pools are very cool.

Wheelie contest on the beach? Where else in CA can one see that? Adding this event to my BL. :-)

Was there last week, perfect weather too.
