Yup. Sinkyone coast is a really special place. I really can't describe it. If you go there, take some hiking boots and make the hike down to Bear Harbor. If you wander around there... note that the 'scrub brush' out on the hillsides is poison oak.

Don't ask how I know that.

I may end up having to skip usal rd. Looks like a bit of rain in the forecast for next week. Not eager to ride in mud, loaded down and solo.

Like many other places in NW California, it is a long walk out, and you may not see another person for quite awhile... like days... or weeks. (Or in a few weeks... till next summer.)

A few miles of mixed rut/gravel/dirt/silt/hardpack. Not much traffic but watch for the elk. They were half way down the hill blocking the road on the way in.

The second annual Usal Road seasonal closure starts today through approximately April 15, 2013.
    http://www.co.mendocino.ca.us/dot/roadClosures.htm

"The road will be closed to vehicular traffic by installing one locking gate across the road at each end of a segment of Usal Road. The road closure would block off approximately 18 miles of Usal Road between the Four Corners intersection and Hotel Gulch. The first gate will be placed northeast of Hotel Gulch leaving access to Usal Beach and campground from State Hwy 1. The second gate will be placed south of Briceland Road allowing access to Bear Harbor Campground."

Wow ,what a great thread, sort of new here. I use to live in Garberville & Ferndale in the late 60 early 70's. Use to go to Shelter Cove and hang at Black Sand Beach. I now ride a XT225 and live in Joshua Tree, Ca. I thought I knew that area pretty good, NOT. I really want to come ride all these roads you guys are posting. A lot of names of places pop up that I haven't thought about in years. We use to hang at the Briceland store around the wood stove and BS all day, is the store still there? Peter pan market? Al's? Anyway keep um coming, Going to Moab for a month next week then maybe head up to Humbolt for some riding and old memories, thanks guys.:D

I was up there yesterday. Went in from the south off of Hwy 1, approx 6 miles in just past the camp areas, the gate is closed. After turning around and comping back down to the camp area ran into a ranger, she said it would be about a month before it would be open. I thought about going around the gate but with a fully loaded bike, I thought better of it.

Sorry no pic of the gate, I was a little pissed about it and didn't think about it.:D

you're on the north side :huh. I didn't want to go around due to not knowing what was on the other side, ei downed trees park rangers etc... Should have just done it. Oh well, I have another reason to go back, like I really needed it. :D

We are planning on riding the Lost Coast towards the end of May starting in Ferndale. I have mapped the usual route down along Matole, Kings Peak and Usal roads heading south. But instead of heading north on 101 I was hoping we could ride north on dirt or small paved roads.

Of course this is where I need the help of anyone who is familiar with the area. Attached is a map of the route I was hoping to take. Can someone pretty please let me if it the route is possible. Will we be turned around by gates, angry land owners or deranged meth heads.

I tried to search for info on the interweb but was unable to find anything.

You mean after riding the Lost Coast ? Yes... there are a number of routes.
The roads in the interior of the lost coast don't go through, most of them are gated.
Ditto in the north too, land is owned by timber companies and the National Park.
You have to go further east to ride north or south.

At any rate, the route on your map won't work. (used to a long time ago).
Assume it is the reverse route?

    Any rate... south

South of Ferndale, just stay on the Petrolia road,
    then take Ettersburg road,
then Shelter Cove, (Horse Mtn or Paved)
    then Chemise Mtn road,
    Sinkyone Winderness Park,
    then the Usal Road.

    Return 1

Hwy 1 left to 101, (paved)
    Bell Springs Road, (mostly dirt)
    Alderpoint Road to Bridgeville, (semi-paved)
    Bridgeville Road to Kneeland, (dirt)
    Showers Pass Road, (dirt)
    Mtn View Ranch Road, (dirt)
    Maple Creek Road, (1/2 dirt)
Snow Camp Road with 5-mile cutoff to 299. (dirt)
Short run on 299 to Redwood House road and Baird Road (dirt)
Big Hill Road in Hupa (dirt)
Red Cap Road to Orleans (dirt)
Orleans to Siead Valley (paved 96)
North at Seiad Valley to Ashland. (dirt)

    Return II (further east)

Hwy 1 left to 101, (paved)
    Bell Springs Road, (mostly dirt)
Alderpoint Road to Hoglan Ranch Road to Kettenpom (semi-paved)
    Kettenpom to Zenia, (paved)
    Zenia to Lassics Road (dirt)
End of Lassics Road to turn north to 36
Top of South Fork Mountain, take South Fork Mtn road to 299.
South Fork is paved, but well worth the ride. Gorgeous.
299 can pick up the above route.

There are lots more routes... lots more.

South Fork Mountain Road was unpassible last Friday. I made it 15 miles from the Hwy 36 side and ran into a large patch of snow couple feet deep on the road in the shade.

Was hoping to get to 299, lot of crap and fallen trees on the road. Should be better in a week or two. It's a road well worth riding. Avenue of the Giants was good as well.

    >"South Fork Mountain Road was unpassible last Friday."

Yup, We rode to Hyampom from the north side (299 via Ammon Ridge and Sims Mtn).
Road was open and mostly clear.
A local guy in the Hyampom store said his buddy in a 4X4 tried Pelletrau and
South Fork road the day before, it was impassible due to snow drifts.

We also rode around in Indian valley. The main roads were open,
but lots of the secondary roads/trails were blocked by down trees.

I think SF Mountain maybe the 2nd or 3rd week in May, as long as the weather stays nice.
(It was summer-weather in the Trinitys all the past week...)

Thanks for the suggestions Twilight. I think we will check out the more eastern route on our way back to our rendezvous point in Douglas City.

Here is how I have it planned so far.

Hwy 1 left to 101, (paved)
    Bell Springs Road, (mostly dirt)
Alderpoint Road to Zenia Bluff Rd, (paved)
Zenia Bluff Rd to Ruth Zenia Rd
Ruth Zenia Rd to Mad River Rd
Mad River Rd to Wildwood Rd to Wild Mad River Rd
Wild Mad River Rd to Horse Ridge Lookout Rd
Camp along Horse Ridge then continue to S Fork Mt Rd

    After camping
South Fork Mountain to Last Chance Trail
Last Chance Trail to Mysterious Unknown could get lost Rd?
Then hopefully make our way to Hyampom from there back to Doug City.

Please feel free to jump in with any other suggestions.

    >"Alderpoint Road to Zenia Bluff Rd, (paved)
Zenia Bluff Rd to Ruth Zenia Rd "

I'd take Hoaglin Ranch road. 50% dirt with some really nice views.
Zenia bluff road is mostly down in the valley, neat, but mostly views of trees and brush. You can get gas at Kettenpom store. IMHO: Kettenpom is a neat place.

Camping on the ridgetops... not much water there. I'd suggest a lower elevation campground with water nearby. (I can't remember a campground on Horse Ridge).

    Other Campgrounds (free)

Indian Valley has a nice camping area by the creek.
Scott Flat Campground - just off hwy 36 near Forest Glen.
    Deer Lick Springs Campground.
Big Slide Campground - north of Hyampom on South Fork Road.

    >"Hyampom from there back to Doug City"

End up in Douglas City? From Hyampom, you can either take the road to 299 (Corral Bottom or FH60)... or take Indian Valley (dirt) to Hayfork.

Hwy 3 from Hayfork to Douglas City is pretty neat, or you can take the 'back way' from Hayfork to Junction City. (mostly dirt).

From Douglas City... go to Weaverville and take Hwy 3 north to Callahan,
then take the Callahan-Gazelle road to I-5 (neat). (Everyone should ride the Scott Mtn summit!)

    Gas in the area.

    Eureka/Fortuna
    Shelter Cove Store
    Redway/Garberville
    Kettenpom
    Ruth Store
Wildwood - Burned this winter. Platina 12 miles east.
    Hayfork
    Hyampom
    Weaverville

** Scott Flat campground... watch for Hells Gate campground, take that turn off, then go past Hells Gate (USFS Fee) and turn upstream, across the bridge over Rattlesnake Creek. Takes you to Scott Flatt.

The lost coast area is a little hot//// There is a huge man hunt going on right now in the North lost Coast area. I would advise staying out of there until they find the Red Bearded dude. He killed his wife and kids about 7 days ago in Shingletown and fled to the Lost coast area. they found his truck there and is still on the loose. this guy is armed and has knowledge of all this area. Very dangerous right now. I will post when he has been captured.
