Low fender carnage

    I was on the Great River Gravel Ride this past weekend when my knobbie front picked up a rock that took out my front fender. Before the carnage:

    Luckily, I had switched out the old style crossover brake lines to the modern "S" type lines a year or so ago. http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=763632 That made all the difference. If I had had the old style lines on, no doubt that I would have gone down hard. As it was, I just did a little trail surgery, added a few zipties, and I finished the 270 mile gravel ride before riding about 250 miles to get home the next day. If I had the old style lines on the bike, the bike would not have been ridable.

    So, if you have the old style brake lines, you really should changed them. Thanks ROKKLYM!!!

    Yes if you hadn't swapped brake lines you would have ended up taking a Lost Rider inspired header. Lost Rider (Advhandle) on his F800.

    I figured out how to make the change on my bike after seeing that video and experiencing a discernible puckering in my nether regions just from watching it. :D Thank you Lost Rider!

    Holy crap that video is horrific. I ride in the Ca dez all the time (mostly on my EXC) and pick up rocks and wire and stuff all the time. I have always been a little concerned about air flow, oil tank and header protection, but I have recently thought more about going High fender on the 990.

    It was snotty mud that ripped mine off.
    Luckily it was gooey and snotty enough that I was only going about 20mph at the time, struggling with slip-sideways balance...

    Obviously, these events were at least a couple of rides PAST the BEST time to fit the high fender :lol3

    For the price of a high fender and fork guards (under $80 IIRC), it would be quite silly to buy a new replacement low fender,
    ....and risk a "Lost Rider" off :wink:

    Had the newer style brake lines with the old fender, two small holes and some small zip ties holding them in place close to the location where there are tabs on the newer style fender.


    Since its up I have a newer style brake line with the plastic piece that holds it to the lower triple clamp and clips to hold speedo sensor cable.

    That was mounted on a 2006 S model with 245 suspension.

    Had to extend after for the 320mm suspension and have now routed them on the outside of the fork legs.

    Was planing to put the old up for auction and 50% off any money would go toward my try to raise some money for charity.

    A new OEM setup is quite expensive.

    Have just not gotten around to put up anything in the flea market yet.

    You and me both! The "S" brake lines were zip tied to the original fender with very small zip ties. When the fender rotated forward it just snapped the zips. The fix for the rest of the day was just to ziptie the lines to the fork uppers.

    My old setup ran the lines inside of the forks, but I think I'll move them to the outside when I get the new fork guards, like this:
