I just got a new to me 800gs. It already has the BMW luggage racks on it ,but no panniers. My question is can I only mount BMW luggage to it or will other brands work?

My gut says you'd only be able to mount a vario case to the OEM vario racks, (if this is what you have). I did a quick look on the net and couldn't find any panniers that would slip onto the stock racks — they are pretty darn unique.

A present the only commercially-available panniers that fit are the Varios.
There's a thread here somewhere on ADVRider wherein some guys have made some homebrew panniers that utilize the Vario mounts.

I personally like the vario mounts as they are pretty much the only ones that don't look ugly as hell when the panniers are off the bike.

I saw your sign in the sky and came ASAP!

FFS, at least have the politeness to fill out your profile noob before starting another thread. Now it would even be better to start a research and don't add up to the trillions of threads that already deal with your problem. Most of your questions have been answered. THIS very thing has been discussed not even two weeks ago and before that at least 2 times. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=927417

There is a thread for question like yours and it's even in the 10 first of this page:

This question is asked enough, that you would think a company would take notice and make an adapter system. I would buy it.

I was the subject of this exact treatment to an identical question two weeks ago, but things improved since flashing my other rack.

The OEM rack ended up with the rest of OEM parts, somewhere in the garage, after considering and dismissing fashioning something. I plan to carry a Rotopax with fuel, and I just don't trust my welding skills enough. I ended up with the TT rack, which will eventually get hard and soft cases.

    Good Cop here:

Welcome to the Parallel Universe n00b. Some hazing required as part of the admission process. We do appreciate it tho when we know who we're talking to and where they're from. I see the Thumper boys already gave you the boot. Loutre likes to bark and I like to kick him when he's sleeping. It's all good.

Everything you need to know is here and pretty much discussed already. Kinda like the omnipotent Q. Just do your homework first and you won't get a detention.

    n00b b00bs good but not required. :D

It's only been recently that the luggage racks were installed at the factory. Prior to that you would have to buy them separately and the Dealer would install them before delivery so if you didn't want OEM you started fresh with your own brand racks having saved your $$. Kinda like getting the comfot seat now instead of the 2x4.

So, this being a new situation, someone will have to see if it's worthwhile. Then there's the Lawyers that might take offense.

    Meh.

He might be trying to figure out how to fill in his profile. I'll put out the milk and cookies just in case.

Thanks for the welcome! New to the adventure riding thing and this is the first time ever on a forum. It is like learning to ride dirt bikes with my Bros. At first you eat a lot of roost, but after a while you get good enough to be roosting them! I will check out those recommended threads. Love this place!

Well for undressing your pants and all that flimsy stuff I don't really know how to explain to you... Best thing is to wait for Reaver's arrival which should be any time soon. Looking out of his shed his bike has been absent for days and I have to care again for his cat :puke1

To post the image nothing simpler than that. As said before we have a thread for almost everything here:
