?

Scared of a little mud and ice?

  1. I'll be there on my 450cc or smaller

  2. I'll be there on my 451cc or larger

  3. Maybe, if it's not raining or snowing or below freezing

  4. Probably, if it's warm and sunny and dry

  5. Are you high? I'll be at home, wrapped in my Snuggie

Saturday, March 17, 2012, conditions permitting. Around here, the middle of March can produce anything from snow to thunderstorms, 70+/sunny to tornadoes. Let's not forget flooding. :huh

I guess most of us are beginning to feel the effects of cabin fever. In the interest of preserving my sanity and yours, I thought it would be fun to pick a somewhat arbitrary date far a day trip in the Madison area and see if anyone's interested. This is partially inspired by the KY Icebreaker thread: http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=751582 While that ride is an overnighter geared toward the bigger bikes, I'm looking at a one day ride geared toward the smaller ones. I'm planning to be on the DR-Z400, but have ridden this area on a 950A and got along just fine. Initially, let's plan on the usual meeting at WalMart and heading out around 10:00am, finishing the afternoon eating wherever gets the most recommendations.

In searching back through all the NOAA and NWS records I could locate, there seems to be a significant warming trend that peaks statistically around the 15th of March. Nothing balmy, but usually quite a bit above freezing. By then, I suspect we'll be ready for a ride regardless of the temps! At any rate, I'm sure the slab bridges iced-over would be not one whit slicker than when covered with that snot-slick moss in mid-summer.

    Who's interested? :ear

Please feel free to add any photos or videos you may have of the Madison area to this thread.

Here's a video of bm3moose and his XR650L handling one of the area's water crossings:

Me and the 950A at the same crossing in the video, but hitting it from the opposite direction:

Thanks for posting this link up in the IRT. I may have never caught this otherwise. Looks like a fun ride. Am going to try and make it. Not sure which steed that I'll pull outta the barn to saddle up on, but most likely will be the XR :evil

If I don't have drill I'm definitely in. Can't let you guys come to my home turf without me there. Water levels will be what to look for but as the dates get closer I can recon all the areas and keep everyone informed.

...any particular reason this event is going to be on a Saturday??? Lots of folks gotta work or run their shops that day.

SE Indiana is an awesome place to ride and anyone who hasn't been there yet ought to make this one.:clap Maybe early in the year those water crossings won't have had a chance to turn green yet.

    Never heard of the place:D

Actually it is my hometown, lived there till 01 except for 3 years while in the military. There are plenty of creek crossings and gravel roads. Make sure and hit Bloody Run Rd it was still open last year but had cross at own risk signs at each end.

I have to work that Saturday or I would come along.

You aren't going to be the only one, Rick. Bummer you can't make it. Local knowledge would be good.

Is this n00b-friendly? I'm fine in gravel and dirt but get my panties in a twist in supertight woods with steep rock trails.
    I'm on a XT250.
    Thanks!:ear

Absolutely! The lion's share of riding will be rough gravel roads and shallow water crossings.

Darn...I'm one of those saps who works Saturdays. Great area though. Did a ride there very similar a couple years back. Think we rode every rock road in Jefferson and Switzerland counties. Keep the tracks for a Sunday later!

It's pretty noob friendly. Dave had no problem on his Vstrom...well who can account for slippery moss. All the gravel roads are fairly well maintained the only one that's a little special is Bee Camp road and the crossing of Jefferson Lake, which last time I was there in the jeep had been washed out on account of some of the rains. By March things can change again, I go out that way a lot exploring so I'll keep an eye on it in case we have to reroute. East Fork road where the water flowing over the culvert picture is a very nice long gravel stretch, probably the longest in the county and ends not too far from Friendship which is always a nice visit, and if people get tired of gravel there's Old SR 62 that comes back.
