Great Master Brewer (MB) aka Kym

Fellow Kiwi inmates - the South Australia ADV inmates were generous with their hospitality and advice to me when I travelled in their State last year.

MB is a pal of Aussie Trev and Kipo - both of whom were very helpful to me (along with others). Kipo came to my attention from the help he provided Clint and Rosie on their travels in the Flinders and beyond.

Master Brewer (Kym) and his pal (also Kym) pick up rental DR650's in Auckland on Monday 14 September. They're due to return them to the Hire place in Auckland on Friday 25 September. Not a lot of time to see all that's on offer in the North Island - but I'm sure they'll make the best of their limited time.

Given Kym's initial expressed interest in covering the Rally of New Zealand Course; I've mooted the idea of meeting them somewhere South of Auckland City on the Monday or Tuesday ( this to be confirmed by Kym) and riding as close to the coast as possible taking in lots of gravel en route to Awakino via Raglan and Kawhia. He seems to like that idea.

From Awakino the plan would be to explore Kiwi Road - decision here as to whether to head to Taumarunui via the Forgotten World Highway - Kym's looking forward to Taranaki's tunnels. I'd mooted the possibility of picking up 'Phreaky Phil' and 'That Looks like fun' 's Cape to Cape route - taking in the magnificent Optoki Road (near Taumarunui) and on through Pureora Forest en route to the East Cape.

Feel free to chime in folks. I plan to only ride the Central portion (i.e. turning for home on reaching the East Cape and or Opotiki). Several inmates from the lower North have expressed an interest in joining the ride.

Kym has indicated he'd welcome all input. I believe he hopes to meet up with a fellow TDM aficionado over on the East Coast and hopes to visit the Coromandel and the Far North for the balance of his time

    Cheers Oaters

Emerging plan - MB & Kym2 will meet me in Pukekohe with a plan to leave there sharpish AM (say 8.30am latest from BP Pukekohe - Wild Bean Coffee) Tuesday 15 September for Awakino via as many Coastal / Gravel roads as possible - as I understand it some of these have formed part of the Rally of NZ course. Locals with specific knowledge advice (Oscar, Motu, MXNut, TriBoy, EddieB feel free to chime in).

I expect we'll firm up revise ideas at Awakino at the end of day one. 'Naki boys (& gals) input here welcomed (Young1, PhreakyPhil and ThatLooksLikeFun). Kym has expressed particular interest in the Taranaki Tunnels

If you want to join us on Monday night at a Pukekohe Motel or Pub (low cost being a consideration) and the Awakino Pub on Tuesday night - comment on here and or send me a PM.

    Hi Guys

Sounds like you've got some good fun lined up for the 1st part of the trip. After Pureora i would suggest a zigzag up to East Cape - out to Napier, up the coast, back through Waikaremoana, over to Opotiki, up the Motu (at one time the slowest stage in the entire WRC!) Then back around East Cape. Then divert inland at Awakeri to Rotorua & out to the coast again at Tauranga via Pyes Pa. Try & fit in a spin around Coromandel on the way back to Auckland too.

If you don't mind a mattress on the floor you are welcome to stay at my place on your way through, I am 20 km out of Rotorua. I'll be away 18-20th though.

    Cheers
    Clint

thanks Clint - great suggestions - depending on how many inmates take up your kind offer of 'bed space' (I'll be self sufficient - sleeping bag and mat, possibly tent) we may look you up - again cheers for your input Clint - exactly what I was hoping for - Kind Regards to you and Rosie - Oaters :)

Hi all, Clint has a very sound suggestion there, I have a very small amount of 'local' knowledge of that area, a wee bit of time on my hands and a desire for a roadie.......so.....
I could offer assistance with routeing and/or guiding/beer testing etc, picking up the route at Taumaranui and leaving around Tauranga.
Just let me know if anyone is interested ok.

PS Ducatijim - saw 'Last Cab to Darwin' yesterday - a top film in my view and I'd strongly recommend - caused my to have 'leaky eyes' :)

Showed the Oodnadatta Pink Roadhouse during the film - isn't that where you and Bass are picture sans riding gear? :) The photo that gave Rosie a shock :)

Do the Motu loop and the Lake Waikaremoana Uerwera national park rides.
And the Whangarei - Tutukaka - Russell ride along the coast to the bay of Islands.

Excellent advice IMO - seems to me your plans for a 'good time' are coming along nicely Masterbrewer - Clint has already suggested Waikaremoana and the Motu as have I - all good

Steve you know you are all welcome to overnight here. Depending on what day you are here I am happy to lead the crew through some back country tunnels with maybe lunch in Whangamomona? I could then head home while you comtinue on?

Michael that's very generous and it'd be a nice option instead of the Awakino Pub - coming on South to Bellblock (suburb of New Plymouth - for Master Brewer's benefit) via the magnificent coastal scenery with you leading us astray through the tunnels. I submit - accepting your kind offer will depend on how many, in addition to the two Kyms and me, require somewhere to lay their head on the Tuesday evening (15 October) having ridden from Pukekohe that morning - watch this space - best regards Oaters

It'd be a pleasure to have you. There's room for 3 in the spare room if I kick out the KTM :D + another in the lounge before we have to pitch a tent. I won't be able to join in much of the ride but if it works out that you get to my place or around Rotorua with an afternoon spare I could probably skive off for an afternoon & show you around some local backroads/hotpools/beers

Jamie should be able to lead you astray well & proper but keep us posted as to your intentions after Taumarunui. There's lots of shortcut/longcut/scenic route options as you make your way east, such as the MMMMM route, that may not be immediately obvious when looking at a map.

    Cheers
    Clint

PS I can confirm it is a complete falsehood & fabrication that Jamie ever got his gear off & posed naked in front of the pink roadhouse at Oodnadatta.:nod

the William Creek Hotel however... :evil :lol3
