Actually Stephen, that's what I always thought. However back in 2008, coming down to the start line for our Oz trip after 18 months of preparation we jumped into the Oz forum to ask a few questions about local conditions. Bear in mind that in the event we did about 18,000 km, mostly off the pavement. We took about $1,000 worth of spare parts with us and never opened a single packet, so I figure that we must have got something right. However when we came to this forum for details, we were treated like total idiots by almost all the responders. The universal assumption was that we didn't have a clue what we were doing and weren't worth wasting time on. I was astounded. Perhaps we didn't explain ourselves very well - I don't know. Maybe we only have ourselves to blame. In any case, our reception was crazy hostile. What saved it was the people who contacted us outside the forum ( mostly PM's) and basically said to ignore the idiots and went on to give us the info we were after. Having said that however, in the entire 2 month trip we met one Oz adv inmate and that was a kiwi living in Darwin.
