Just returned from 6 days riding around lake Superior. My 5 foot 2" girlfriend Isabel rode along on her first long ride and did amazing on a loaded down klr 650.
It was probalby the longest time we had away from our kids together, ages 9 and 3 and although the weather didn't always cooperate it was an excellent trip.
I'm back at work now :cry. So will fill in more info and lots of pics and some video as I can.

I'm curious to read your report. This is a trip I've wanted to take for over a year now.

    Hi Kraby :wave

btw - I was talking to Larry W. yesterday and mentioned running around Superior. He's game to go with us next summer if we can make it work out.

I did the trip back in 2000 with my son after he graduated high school.

It was very nice except the black flies and mosquitos that come out at dusk in Canada.:eek1

So the I"ve lowered the klr a few inches and also cut a few inches of foam out of the seat. She can put one foot on the ground at a time but not both.
We're load up for camping and cooking. I want to ride backroads but we only have 5 days to ride and I realize it's a long way around that friggin lake.

I load most of the stuff on my bike so her's isn't too heavy, all she has is her clothes, sleeping bag and sleeping pad.

We both have our own businesses and have to work a full day on friday. I actually had to run to Sault ste. marie and back too.

5pm rolls around and we already were mostly packed the night before.

Good to go, she gears up.

And were off around 530 pm

    oops

I'm gonna get it for posting that one :D

I'm sure I'd drop my bike too if I couldn't touch the ground and it weighed 4 times or more than I did.

    anyway no problem were off.

it's a beautiful scenic ride to Sault ste. Marie, even though I've done it a thousand times and already once that day but the weather was good and we were riding.

forgive my lack of photography skils but I take pics while riding too :evil

    Is she still back there.

I'ts about 250kms to SSM, we stopped 3 times or so along the way.

Then once in the Soo we had to visit our friend Tim Horton as we knew we wouldn't be seeing him for a few days.:cry

Then dig out the passports and head across the bridge to the good ole USA.

They must have known we were coming they put up a welcome sign for us.. how nice.

I refuse to ride on the I75(boring), so we take some backroads and end up at brimley state park.
My take on state parks are kind of like our provincial parks. Vehicle passes are a rip off, especially when we have to buy one for each bike, but I thought we may stop in at some park things the next day so it could be worth it.

Arrived. About a 300km evening ride and we get all set up before dark... Sweet:1drink . All is going good so far and Isabel is riding like a champ. She even rode down to the corner store to pick up some beer while I set up the tent, it just doesn't get any better.

    P.S. I don't look that geeky in real life.... I don't think:dunno

    Hi Finndian,

Nice pics. I stopped by your shop about 9 am on Friday but you had already headed out to the Soo. One of these times you'll be there...

If there had been a motorcycle in the background this would have been the quintessential Canadian motorcycle picture:clap

After a nice night in the tent I got up early and walked around the park, checked out the nice sandy beach and watched a ship coming into lake superior from the locks in the Soo.
We packed up the tent and hit the road heading west.

There is a lot to see along the pictured rocks lakeshore but I decided we should get farther from home as all this stuff is a day's ride from home and besides I had ridden there last year and already saw things like.

    tahquamenon falls

    Whitefish point shipwreck museum

    crisp point lighthouse

the log slide and so on.

So we headed out on hwy 28 west. at shigleton we turned north and made a stop at Miners castle near munising.
The rock cliffs here are cool looking similar looking to the Grand canyon (much smaller of course)
there's a nice beach and miners falls also.

I took a bit of helmet cam on the ride from the beach up towards the falls.

    <embed width="448" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" src="http://i73.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid73.photobucket.com/albums/i208/jonesy_photo/lap%20of%20superior/minerscastleroad-1.flv">The falls are about a mile walk round trip (sweat), I think around a 40ft drop.

    cool tree on the trail

    The falls

me with my riding pants down around my ankles catching the cool breeze from the falls. I think it was 18Celcius but once you convert that to Farenheit it feels hotter:D

I'll have to go back and take one of the boat tours that run out of munising sometime.

Back on the bikes and we continued west. I started to pour rain just as we pulled into Marquette, so that meant it was luchtime.

A big buffet lunch and the rain stopped and off we go.
I had to snap a pic of this near chassel as we headed up toward the Keewenaw peninsula.

Then on too Houghton Mi. As it rained lightly off and on we decided a Motel room with a pool and hot tub was in order. We pulled into the Super 8 for the night and got some wings and beer to go:clap .
I'm not sure if someone had been throwing water on the thermocouple in the Sauna for a while before I got in or maybe a finlander owns the motel but this is the first half decent motel sauna I remember having:freaky
