Formula One legend Michael Schumacher suffered a tragic skiing accident that caused serious injury to his brain, but the first glimmer of hope has emerged with sources suggesting his condition has improved. Citing manager and spokesperson Sabine Kehm, multiple media outlets have reported that Schumacher’s life is no longer in imminent danger.

“This is a certain relief,” Kehm is quoted by Spain’s El Mundo. “The most dangerous moment has passed.”

Doctors treating Schumacher have made similar comments. Jean-Francois Payen, the doctor in charge of the intensive care unit at the Grenoble University Hospital Center where the F1 ace is being treated, was quoted as saying: “While we emphasize that the danger has not yet passed, it is certainly no longer acute.”

:clap Still hoping for the best outcome....go red car go.

My son grew up watching F1 with me during M Schumacher's heyday, & he's still his racing idol.

Prayers to Micheal, & daggers to the uncouth.

    What a POS.

I hope Schumacher can make a full recovery, but certainly worry the odds are stacked very against him. Closed head injuries are bad juju and very often have lifelong residual deficiencies.

I checked with my German contact this morning. It has been radio silence since the request for privacy. He can't believe the press has respect for that......over there. In the US, we would have pooparazzi rappelling off the hospital roof to get spy photo's.

    from Maranello

Maranello, 16 January – Over two weeks have passed since Michael Schumacher had his skiing accident. In Maranello Luca di Montezemolo and Stefano Domenicali are still in daily contact with the family to keep up to date with the situation
In the meantime, there have been many shows of affection for Michael which come in day after day, from those who spent eleven years working with him while he drove for Ferrari, as well as from people who have supported him from all around the world, namely Ferrari fans.
Actions, words and thoughts that show just how important Michael is within the very heart of those who love and live for Ferrari and how important a role he has played in the history of the Prancing Horse.
We therefore decided to gather all these messages together through the Scuderia’s Twitter and Facebook pages and to publish some of them in a special bulletin board on our Internet site.
Naturally enough, given the close links between him and Michael, the first post is from President Montezemolo:
“Michael, my thoughts are always with you, with great affection! Everyone at Ferrari is following your situation, just as they did from the pits at so many Grands Prix that you won with us and I am equally certain that you will also win this very important battle!”

They're attempting to wake him soon (already?)... Trying to bring him out of the medically-induced coma.

Unfortunately, the longer he's in the coma, the less likely his mind and body will function normally due to lack of oxygen to the brain. Sad to see from one of the best EVER. :cry

BBC had a couple doctors say pretty much the same thing - they had no personal involvement but were world-renowned brain surgeons so had great insight on cases such as this.

I read another piece in the financial times that was not nearly as grim. Supposedly, he was responding to tests that are customarily given. Not sure what that means, and I didn't stay at a HIE either. Here is hoping for the best.

Unfortunately, the experts say the odds are against Michael Schumacher ever again being the person he once was. It's extremely depressing to read that. Apparently it will be considered a successful outcome if he's able to do simple things like wash, clothe and feed himself. This is beyond sad.

Latest news is they've begun the process of waking him up, which can take some time.

According to the article, he'll open his eyes and gradually regain the other senses. They'll be able to assess the level of damage and what kind of recovery is possible.

Now two weeks since doctors started trying to wake Michael Schumacher, the F1 legend remains in a coma.
That is the news of the German daily Bild-Zeitung, reporting that while the seven-time world champion has often presented reflex twitches since the anesthetic was reduced, Schumacher is still not responding to deliberate stimuli.
However, Bild said the former Mercedes and Ferrari driver’s wife Corinna – who is at his bedside on a daily basis – is following the doctors’ advice by continually talking to the 45-year-old, as there is evidence it can help a patient in Schumacher’s condition.
The report also claimed the newly-retired Ross Brawn, who worked closely with Schumacher during the ultra-successful Ferrari era, visited the famous driver’s bedside, slipping in almost unnoticed by the media last Thursday through the staff entrance.
Meanwhile, it is believed that French investigators into the skiing accident are preparing to reveal their findings, with Bild citing ‘legal sources’ in believing the file will simply be closed.

Some reports say the camera ha was wearing on his helmet may have greatly increased the amount of damage to it and magnified the resulting injury. Something to think about when you wear the GoPro.
