Highway 4 (Ebbetts), 89 (Monitor) and 108 (Sonora) are all open. Hwy 120 (Tioga) through Yosemite, current expected opening is around 5/9.

Thanks for the update. Sooner than I expected given the yosemite conditions a week ago, things must be melting out fast.

There goes the neighborhood. The eastern slope was incredible last weekend. Deserted roads and beautiful weather. Just a few bikes on 395 between Bridgeport and Topaz. Otherwise zero traffic.

You got that right. I got the tree guy coming to do a butch job. I should make a ride over in the next 3 days to see how bad it is.

I was up on Monitor 2 weeks ago, not much snow there. It's going fast. Last year we could go over Tioga in January, this year Ebbetts and Sonora in April. If that had been in the same year, it would have been a great riding season ... though not so good for fire or water supply. It's time to reprise my Santa Cruz-Bodie one day round trip from last January.

My thoughts as well. I usually like going up 108 when they open it to Kennedy Meadows, so it's just a dead end, and have it all to myself. Not going to complain about more riding though

Did the three passes today and was surprised how few bikes there were, as well as law enforcement :evil Just perfect.

I was thinking the same thing today, I haven't checked records, but I can't remember ever riding them earlier than this.

Looking at the tioga pass opening history, last year was a bit earlier (may 7), before that it's been 25 years since the pass opened before the 11th.

I did go over the passes today and brought back a few pictures.

I always like this one for the people from Colorado:

    Leavett meadow.

    Thats where the snow goes:

More snow on Ebbetts, than the other 2. Here is Mosquito lake.

Quite a few motorcycles out today, but no big groups.

I did take Loope Canyon road to the top, just to test how my KLX 680 handled the road gearing. All was well except for the picture.

    The roads look great.

I have been over all the passes on a motorcycle except for Tioga, which I hope to do soon after opening. Does anybody know if the pavement is clear (like the photos above) at opening time, or does it take a while for the remaining layer to melt away once the snowplows get what they can?

Once they plow it down to pavement it melts pretty fast. Just pay attention to night time temps and shade, in case it freezes.

Hwy 4 is normally good for running water as the snow melts. I do not remember even seeing that this year. Tioga is pretty much above the tree line and gets a lot of sun.
