Ran into party-boy today - he was racing his new SM up and down a busy street.

I wondered why he was riding on that street......but then it hit me

Thanks for the answer. That makes sense. I guess I could have called my buddy at the Fish cop office to find out, but I was too lazy.

Piney is shut down!!! Had a couple come into the store this morning that said they had driven from arkansas somewhere planning on staying at piney but it fell to the government shutdowns. Not sure if its true or not but I'm going to look around online for a list or just ride up there in the morning and find out for myself.

    It probably is.

I have a hunch that they may be open again by November. I know that most of the National Parks are moving campers out, I wonder if backcountry camping at LBL is "closed" right now too. If not, were does one get the permit?

If i'm not mistaken the south visitor center has permits, and some of the smaller camping areas that they classify as back country have them. If its not raining in the morning I'm going to ride up and see whats closed and what isn't. Hopefully they will open everything back up soon though. We have a family vacation planned to the smokies in 2 weeks but they are shut down now and will evidently write you a trespassing ticket if they catch you on the hiking trails there.

Who needs a permit? It's not like park rangers will be out looking for violators. Of course, if you did get busted I'm sure they'd find a way to make you a terrorist. :huh

Pretty sure this whole "shut down" thing is just a ruse to panic the sheep into demanding more credit for the government. I doubt they'll stay down long at all cuz it could be very destabilizing to their over all grasp on power.

Not trying to turn this into a political debate but, I really think the worst thing about this shut down is that we can't call the camp ground officials (about more important issues like riding dirt bikes) until the dancing monkeys pack up the circus & split.

I could be wrong though, maybe it is the end of the world. :lol3 Any body like R.E.M.?

Funny you would say...according to my neighbor in Tellico, the gates to all the visitor centers and rec areas are all closed as of today and all the blue light trucks/suv's are parked. I might scrap the rally and cross all the bars we've been riding by for the last 5 yrs! Nah, I'm outta here! :deal

If we do get this fall camp out/ride put together at LBL, I say we hit Turkey Bay on Saturday. Every one I've ridden with off ADVrider could easily do the novice trails & if it's dry BIG bikes shouldn't be too hard.

Stopped and talked to Troy for a little bit today. With the campgrounds being closed, I'm going to look into two other leads and let you guys know what might be viable in the next couple of days.

I need to hit up Turkey Bay, I've never been. Sounds like that might be a good plan (and hunter free too).

Not that anyone is in the market, but I happened by Castle today, and they have a lonely 2012 690 on the floor. Normally 10,299 marked down to 8,999. Slightly under used retail for a brand new machine. Might be the time to make a deal.

Okay, so with the uncertainty of Piney being open on the second weekend of November, I've looked into some other non-federal camping areas that Troy and I discussed last night. Fat Daddy's doesn't offer tent camping currently, and may be closed anyway. Paris Landing, however, is open, close to LBL, and cheap. The "basic loop", sites 48-61, is completely open at the moment, and is $28 for 2 nights after fees.

    https://tnstateparks.itinio.com/paris-landing

FOR NOW, we don't have a set place that we are going to call base camp, yet. We are going to wait just a bit longer and see if Piney reopens. If it does, we will try to get in there.

Just putting this out there, and seeing what people think. After we get to the point that we have started booking camp sites somewhere, I'll see about starting a new thread for the non-event.
