I've been looking at Rushing Creek, too. I think it may work out better as a group area. I think Energy Lake may have a fee to enter, even if you are not camping.

Not wishing bad luck on the Swinging Bridge ride, but hope it works out so you can make it.

Me too, I didn't realize it was self-service now. Seems very positive, and a LOT more basic spots. I can't find definite site costs on lbl.org, but I think it might be $9 a night per site, so a few bucks cheaper too.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll do some poking around.

Oh, and Energy Lake is $4 per vehicle to enter if not camping there.

Budget cuts are coming down the pipe to LBL this year. There are some campground changes. Rushing Creek is supposed to lose utilities and I think become back country camping. Don't hold me to that, I'll try to find the link.

Well, so much for that thought. It is/was a nice place, just to remote to get a lot of use I guess. Anyway, if you plan on doing any scouting, post up and I might be able to tag along.

Bummer. Troy was planning on calling them, maybe it'll still be open when we head that way? Finger's crossed!

(the site still has it listed as a backcountry/self-service campground, but doesn't have many more details listed)

    Yes it is plated!!!!

I don't know the details by the lbl200 is held at the Piney Cove campground and it is really really nice. Plus the trails on the south end of LBL are WAAAAAAY better than the north end.

I wanted an LBL contact name so I spoke to Jesse Thomas, the LBL200 guy. He also confirmed Rushing Creek was closed, but highly recomended Energy Lake.

I have two names to call at LBL. Both are very familiar with the LBL200, so they will have an idea of what we are looking for. Jesse said both guys are easy to work with. I'll find out the best way to move forward on making Energy Lake the base camp.

I was wondering whether you all had thought about Piney. I just figured it was too nice and civilized. It's on the South side and is quite nice. Showers, RV hookups etc. http://www.lbl.org/CAMPPiney.html here is a map of the sites http://www.lbl.org/pdf/11PineyCampgroundMap.pdf

Reservation site https://www.usedirect.com/CampLBL/Facilities/MapView.aspx , I did a quick check and it appears to be $6 a night for a non electric campsite.

One good thing about Piney is that you are about 5 miles away from Hwy. 232 which is quite a nice twisty road for those that need a break from the dirt and gravel. :evil

    Hope this helps

Piney is a wonderful option, and close to fuel. Hillman Ferry at the North End is just as nice. Energy Lake has an advantage being in the middle.

I learned there is a large group at Energy on our weekend and spots are being reserved now for that. Rushing Creek is out. Piney at the south end, or Hillman up north are the other shower options.

Here is another radical idea... Set up base camp at Turkey Bay.

    Let's hear your thoughts .....:ear

Stay at Turkey Bay Get there early cause its first come basis. There's plenty of :deals items large enough for any size group. You'll never make everyone happy. Some may not like the sand at TB but it adds to the challenge.

I moved away from the area 10 yrs ago and get back once every year or two. As mentioned if your a beginner or even a novice on a "big bike" will have trouble just making the boundary loop. It's a gret loop and I would love to blast up to the old silo on my VStrom running a set of TKC's

***THE BEST OF LBL(NORTH) DIRT AND GRAVEL!***

Where: Central Welcome Station Parking Lot

When: 0930 Saturday Feb 9 (Kick stands up 1000)

What: 100 ish miles of the best dirt and gravel the North End of LBL has to offer. See map attached! We will be riding the yellow loop on the east side of the trace going and the west coming back. I'm a mountain biker and I can do the whole loop drinking water and snacking on a protein bar. We will however get near to Grand Rivers and could easily jump off the loop and eat lunch! There is something here for everyone. The big bikes don't have to do the jeep trails and could meet us at the next connector. We will inevitability make some wrong turns along the way, but those just make it all the more fun! I will have some maps to hand those that come. See you there!

I think I have a pretty sweet route laid out for us. As long as everyone stays safe and no mechanical problems we should get all the fun we can handle!
