What time are you thinking about heading out? Does anyone know if the West Fork Butte or Elk Meadows roads are open?

About packed. Leaving no later than 3:30-4:00. Like to hit Hoodoo Lake by 6:00. Inciweb map says Elk Meadow closed from US 12 up aways and Packers Meadow to ID line on the other end. so I guess West Fork Butte is probably open.

    Same for me.
On a side note, got my Seat Concepts seat on Tuesday. I ordered for a 2008-2011 KTM 690 Enduro.( Per SC recommendation)
It's supposed to be 1/2" lower than the stock 2017 seat.
It does feel lower, and is way more comfortable than the stock seat.
Wish I could have gone riding this weekend but, I'm cleaning chimneys and chainsaws. :doh

    Be safe Ron !

Has anyone ridden the Gold Creek Ridge Trail in Stevensville?

    What's the difficulty level?

Gonna take my 300 over there and trying to decide whether or not the wife could handle it on her TTR.

Great little trip. Not too far, not too rugged. Just right. Left the valley about 4:00 Thursday with good forecast through Friday. Just take my time and take more pictures. Even took the long lens. Commune with nature. I pulled into Lochsa Lodge but only to grab a drink and some snacks for the evening, then down the dirt on the Elk Summit road and up to Hoodoo Lake Campground. I've been up there before and stayed overnight once a few years back. A beautiful place and very off the grid. Pulled in with plenty of time to set up camp and take a walk around. Now one else staying, but there was a couple that had just left and said they had seen moose and calf. But gone by the time I did my walk-about.

Set up camp and the view behind me:

Not a full moon, but enough once the lights went out.

    Camp mate.

The sun had long disappeared and not much light, but I still got a few good pictures.

Someone had even left enough firewood for the evening and the morning.

It did get cold. I figured down in the 20s so I was snuggled and zipped tight in the bag. Got to test out a new inflatable air pad which turned out great. I slept from about 9:00 pm and didn't leave the bag until 8:00 am the next morning.

After coffee and breakfast, time to check the lake for wildlife. Down by the lake, I turned my back and heard a loud woosh behind me as five loons came from up the lake, turn in a perfectly executed turn and landed just beyond me.

    Duck time.

Now the light was getting better.

Time to dry out the camp and pack.

    Under close supervision.

Before hitting the highway, I turned up the Toom Beall Road' Great road starting out through a dense old growth cedar section then you get out where you can see back over in the Lolo Motorway country.

Coming back down, close to the top, I scooped out a road and you just never know what sights you will see.
A parking area with a view to the east of the spine of the Bitterroots...and more.

    Where'd the smoke go?

To put it all the views above together together, I used my cell phone in panorama mode. Click on pic.

And then...on the way back down...the grouse attack....

We've all seen grouse on these back roads I've even run into them (or more correctly had them run into me!)
As I was cruising slowly around one corner, in the straight ahead I spied a grouse, Then more grouse. I stopped the bike and pulled the camera out of my bag. There were about 6 hens and a male...who was very intent on herding his flock.

I sat quietly and let the flock pretty much go about their business a usual accepting me as just an object in the road. Once I had been there quite awhile, I pulled in the clutch with my left hand, holding the camera in my right and very, very slowly moved closer
    [IMG]

A couple let me get very close. Atitionhen walked within a foot of my foot on the left. I don't think the male was too happy about that. Maybe he thought I was competition.
He shook his tail and walked right up to scold me.

Well enough. Time to head out. Need gas so Lochsa Lodge is calling and maybe lunch. There was a bunch of cruiser and custom Harleys about so I had to sneak into the parking lot on the other side of the trees to prevent any chrome migration.

And who drops in to join me for lunch, but Capt. Salmon. Nice lunch, good company, been a great ride. Time to head home. The joys of solo moto-camping fully appreciated.

Headed back to Washington on Friday so I am out for this weekend. Had a good trip on the new bike last week. Got home Tuesday. Managed to dodge all the rain except for some in Spokane yesterday. When I got to the motel in Cd'A Monday evening and got off the bike to go to the office they must have seen me walking and gave me the room in the picture no questions asked. Discount too!

No, but I tried to hope it so.
I'll clean it up Saturday and get the snow shovel ready for winter

Ya. I'm pulling up plants today and drug out the snow shovels while I was at it. Probably move out the snow blower while I'm at it. (Best prophylactic can think of to ward off the snow.)
