I know, I know... Not another oil thread, right? Well, I'll try to keep it very specific.

I am currently running Mobil-1 15w50 synthetic oil in my 1150GS. This decision is not up for debate in this thread. ;-) My last oil change was about 2k miles ago and I noticed that the level was just below the bottom of the sight glass when I went to ride it a couple of weeks ago, so I topped it up with some BMW branded 20w50 I had on the shelf. I put about 1/8 quart in it... enough to get it to the middle of the glass... and away I went.

I noticed today when I was changing my trans & FD gear oil that the BMW 20w50 oil I used is not synthetic. Is it OK to mix synthetic and organic like that, or should I drain/replace it?

I could have just said yes, but I felt generous and gave him an option to read more opinions than just mine!

You should only use the synthetic/dino mix the oil manufactures make because they know what they are doing.........

LOL @ Notch... Thanks, that was awesome!

So most sources indicate that it's fine, but of course there has to be one that says it might not be. LOL.

I'd avoid it if possible but it won't hurt anything. That wasn't always true but it's changed.

The worst thing that you can do to your engine is not put in any oil. The second worst is not putting in enough oil. Everything else that you do with your oil choices is fine; just match the oil to the appropriate API (or JASO) certification and operating temperature.

is "organic oil" refined without fertilizer and pesticides and hand made in small local refineries operated by semi-retired hippies?
sounds like the organic veggies we get around here

You'll be fine. I drove a Land Rover 188K miles by dumping whatever oil I had lying around in the crankcase to keep up with the massive leaks everywhere :lol3

I think at one point it had a mix of dino castrol 20-50, Mobil 1 4t 10-40 (syn), Mobil Clean 5000 10-30 (dino) and some Kawisaki branded 10-40. :rofl

That said, the oil leaked out too fast to do anything bad anyway.
