UK to Mongolia on a 125 cc bike

I'll be riding a Suzuki Van Van

    19th July 2014 - 30th August 2014

The MR is not a proper rally. The organisers are in it for laughs (and to make a profit) and it is more a trek by any route possible from the UK to Mongolia and points in between

So the deposit is paid for 'Team Bongo'. The name is provisional and may change subject to sponsorship.

I hope to raise several thousand pounds for charitable causes.

I'm going to put down some of my planning here. It may be useful for others (or a warning :lol3)

    Preliminary thoughts:

    1: Route:

This dictates timescales and visa requirements.
I'm looking provisionally at a route through Ukraine Russia Kstan & Mongolia.

    2: H & S:

    Medical
    Innoculations
Medical Insurance (the MR have a recommended broker)
Dentist (don't want this impacted wisdom tooth playing up in the 'stans)
    Optician
First aid kit / emergency kit.

    Bikes:

Two or three VanVan 125s have to be sourced in the UK.
Joined the VanVan forum, very helpful so far.
Pre - FI models 2006 or earlier
Larger tanks (DR200 may fit and gives 300+ miles range)

    Preparation

Luggage: Topbox, soft panniers and seat roll bag, tankbag,
    Rotopax fuel and water tanks
    GPS
    Service
    HD chain and sprockets
Heavy duty tires and wheel bearings
Spares (tubes, levers, gear shift, oil seals, bulbs, cables, fuses etc)
    Tools

    Camping gear:

Lightweight tent, bag, very basic subsistence.

    Documents and permits:

    Carnet
    Visas
    International licence
Check on mandatory requirements for riding ex-Europe

    Web Site

Need to raise 1000 GBP per team rider sponsorship as part of the terms of entry
Separate sponsorship luggage and bike related (Team VanVan, Suzuki?)

Lots of fun. To be continued.

Don't think you'll need a carnet unless you do go via Iran.

Was just about to put down my deposit on an organised trip to Ladakh next June. Saw this and haven't done it. Yet. I'm planning with a buddy to ship bikes to Mongolia or Kyrgyzstan in 2015 and ride them back.

Will probably stick with Plan A but thinking about it.

No carnet needed unless you go through Iran. My only comment on the route is that you could also consider going across the Caspian sea by ferry and go through Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, though the route above does limit visa costs. Hopefully this won't be taken as trolling, but if you really do have charity in mind then the Mongolia Charity Rally is also an option, the Mongol Rally and Mongolia Charity Rally started as the same event, the Mongol Rally went profit making through the Adventurists (but still retained a requirement to raise money for charity), the Mongolia Charity Rally remained charitable and the UK adventure charity Go Help was founded to run it and keep it as a non-profit event. Either way you'll have an amazing time. One thing to watch though: I understand that this year teams on the Mongol Rally can't leave their cars in Mongolia and have to either drive them back or pay for them to be shipped back. This isn't the case for the Mongolia Charity Rally, where cars are donated or auctioned for charity in UB. I was one of the first guys to do the southern route in 2004. It was amazing, whatever you end up doing it will be incredible. Good luck!

I could have eight weeks of vacation time saved up by next July. But it seems complicated and unlikely.

    One step closer Ray.

Can't go into details but the gig is likely to be winding up here. So the planets are aligning. Will know for certain in January. You need a lodger for 6 weeks starting June?

Hey fellow ADV'r! I just found this post on a google search.

Myself and three other blokes will be driving to Mongola in a Toyota Yaris. I'll def try to seek you out for a beer or something at the starting (and hopefully) the finish line :)
