I was asked to put some road (mostly paved) loops together for riders in the Spring 2013 RedNEK Rendezvous. Without further ado, here they are. Each begins and ends at Brighton State Park in Island Pond, Vermont. They may be started or stopped an any point. Each is approximately 300 miles in length, or a full day of riding given the nature of the terrain. There is generally no lack of services along these roads, although there may be more than 30 miles between gas stations in portions of Maine and New Hampshire. These have been selected for scenery and riding challenge. They include portions of narrow, twisting mountain roads. They traverse areas that can be heavily populated by deer, moose, bear, and wild turkeys. Any of these loops present an increased challenge in wet weather. It is highly recommended that the tracks be studied in a mapping package (Google Earth, for example) that gives a clear view of the nature of the terrain before starting your ride. It should be noted that the ascent and descent figures are the same as these begin and end from the same point. Therefore, the total climb and descent on the Vermont loop is over 51,000 feet, or nearly ten miles Any of these loops are easily reduced to make for a more leisurely day. New Hampshire Loop: View attachment New Hampshire Road Loop.gpx This includes many of the plums of Northern New Hampshire: The Kancamagus Highway, Bear Notch, Hurricane Mountain, and Dixville Notch, as well as some less challenging but very scenic roads that are less traveled. The sections along the Connecticut and Androscoggin rivers are particularly nice. 291 miles, approximately. Maximum elevation: 2842 feet. 17,855 feet ascent/descent.
