I'll be riding home to CA on my new-to-me GS from Raleigh, NC later this week. Schedule has me in Memphis on Sunday, 10/08. Can anyone recommend a decent motel/area for a brief overnight stop?

Proximity to a decent BBQ joint wouldn't hurt...

    Thanks

Sorta depends on if you want to stay downtown or not. If you do, the Hotel Chisca on south main was just renovated last year. You can never go wrong with the Peabody, but that's some serious $$$. Can we interest you in some fried chicken instead? :deal The downtown Gus's is really great, or Uncle Lou's down by graceland. We're not native Memphians, but we think the fried chicken is better than the bbq.

I really can't offer any insight about hotels out in the burbs. We're also on tent space.

What kind of budget are you talking about? There is a Hampton Inn on Beale St. that has a garage. You don't want a hotel anywhere near the good BBQ joints. The decent hotels are at Wolfchase, 385 and Forest Hill Irene (or Hacks Cross), 240 or Shady Grove and Poplar, and the downtown hotels like the Doubletree, Hampton, Holiday Inn, Peabody, and the Residence Inn. Probably missing a couple down there.

As for decent BBQ. I normally recommend Central BBQ (the one on Central). But there are a bunch of decent ones around. Corky's, Germantown Commissary, Interstate, One and Only, and Rendezvous.

While your are here, the Bass Pro pyramid is worth checking out. Just don't eat there, the food is not worth the price.

I'd second The One and Only or Germantown Commisary and add in Elwood's Shack and The BBQ Shack. I'm personally not a fan of Rendezvous. Yeah, it has some cool atmosphere and it's on TV, but I've never had a great meal there.

I always stay at the Hilton on Ridge Lake Boulevard. It’s right near the interstate and near plenty of good food. Not near downtown Memphis so you avoid all the hassle of navigating a downtown area. I will second the One & Only BBQ on Kirby (specifically the dry rub ribs with baked potato salad). I personally thought The Germantown Commissary was garbage, Rendezvous was just OK. The chicken places mentioned above are also solid choices, specifically Uncle Lou’s.

Only if he doesn't like his new GS and wants an insurance payout and a visit to the Med. Graceland is only relatively safe to visit during the day, and I would not go down there on a bike.

At the 1 and Only now for lunch. I love how thin they slice their brisket, and the twice baked potato salad is addictive.

I like their turkey plate and their sausage plate. I haven't had their brisket.

    Thanks everyone.

What about the Millbranch road area north east of Graceland?

That part of town is not safe after dark. Not really safe when the sun is up either. You are better off in East Memphis (240 and Poplar area), Collierville, Germantown, or Bartlett (40 and Germantown Parkway). You want to stay out of the southern and northern areas of Memphis. You are also pretty safe in the Downtown area between the Fedex Forum and St Jude. When you go outside those areas, things get interesting really quickly.

If I had to stay down that way, the only place I'd choose is the Courtyard by Marriott. It's right next to the Medtronic buildings, so it's mostly business travelers. And it's also very well lit.

Minor change in plans will put me west of Memphis for the night. Thanks for all the advice.

Do not stay in West Memphis Arkansas. Forrest City may be okay, but I detest I-40 through Arkansas and avoid it like the plague. Maybe Little Rock?
