I'm curious, how does this new roller derby relate to the old roller derby that I watched as a kid back in the sixties. That old stuff look pretty hard core, but I also thought it was theatrics like pro wrestling. Not to say that they didn't take some hard falls never the less.

The old roller derby did have a lot of pro wrestling type theatrics. It was also banked track, which I guess is a lot faster than the flat track derby that I do. When I first watched derby on YouTube right after I started on this team, I was surprised at how slow it seems. Once you get your bearings on what is going on out on the track it is a lot of fun to watch. The athleticism involved is pretty amazing. I jammed (the one who tries to break through the pack to score points) for the first time this weekend. I never made it through the pack to score and got knocked down 3 times. The jam lasted the whole two minutes and it took me another 4 after it was done for me to catch my breath.
