    From a piece on autosport.com:

Hayden said his slump had been due to using up his tyres too early.

"It was fun for a couple of laps," said the American. "We know our bike is great at generating heat in the tyres, and for the first few laps, I was able do what I wanted. Then about the time it looked like the other guys' tyres came up to temperature, mine had already started losing grip, especially in the front."

    FYI

“@HRC_MotoGP: Dani currently top in WU. @Official_CS27 decided not to waste a set of tyres in these 50/50 conditions..”*

“@gavinemmett: As stated by @HRC_MotoGP Stoner wanting to conserve tyres. Makes sense. May need 2 wet sets in the race today considering wear... #pitstop?!”*

Agreed on #1...It was so awkward.
He said he is going to keep the plain white helmet all year. We'll see if that changes as the offers of money comes in. Or if Rossi gets in his ear as a fellow paizzano and explains to him the value of style and self promotion. Impressive as hell ride though, plain bike, helmet and all.

Cal used the 'new' front tire in the race and it worked really well. I think we will be seeing more riders choosing to use that tire in the very near future.

I don't know who makes the decision on how many of each type of tire to bring to each race weekend, DORNA or Bridgestone or a combination of the two. But I think the situation could use some improvement.

IMHO, Bridgestone have made themselves look very bad the last few years.

it goes back to 2008 when there was "Bridgestone" tracks and "Michelin" tracks and if you did not have the "right" tires at the right track you couldn't run up front. It made for no-parity and weird racing.
That is the simplified version, but how I remember it.

Yes and no, maybe Pedrosa was more to blame in that Michelin's requirement was that they supply tires for at least one factory team; they didn't want to become tire suppliers for the "junior" teams. With the likelihood that Lorenzo would follow Pedrosa in demanding Bridgestones, Michelin was going to leave. In order to keep Bridgestone from having an expensive king-maker monopoly, Dorna opened the control tire system to bidding, and its main benefit is fairness. There are no more Saturday night specials for star riders.

Bridgestone doesn't make everyone happy all the time -- that is not news.

They're not making Honda happy right now,, Casey doesn't like the new tire but the majority have spoken and that's what they have to run..

What I read was that both Casey & Dani both thought the tyres were fairly similar, but picked the 'old' tyre as a preference. I can't see the new tyre dramatically altering the order at the front of the field.

I think Honda has made the thou slihtly too stiff...hence the chatter they need the softer carcass to reduce chatter....i am sure a slightly more flexi chassis is on the way

Cheers! Thanks for that,I guess it makes sense, and is a reflection on just how dodgy the weekend's conditions really were. Still, it's highly unusual for riders not to take every opportunity for extra track time. Especially these days.
Here's another pic of Stoner. Not quite 'in control'....(or is he?) :huh

Bridgestone has announced that they are to bring forward the introduction of a new 2012-spec front tire, and start allowing riders to use it from the Jerez round of MotoGP. The new tire was tested extensively during the preseason, with versions tried at both Sepang tests and at the IRTA test at Jerez. The tire features a modified construction which allows it to heat up more quickly as well as provide more feedback to the riders.

The selected construction was one of two types tested during the preseason. The two types - designated as "21" and "24" - differed only slightly, the central section being slightly less rigid in construction on the 21 compared to the 24. The riders were positive about both types, but were split on which tire was best. The majority of the riders preferred the 21, praising it has having better stability and feedback. Surprisingly, the Honda riders took the opposite view, saying that it was the 24 which was the more stable tire, the 21 providing less stability under braking. The difference appears to be in the way that the Honda reacts under braking, when compared to the Yamaha and the Ducati, but Casey Stoner felt that riders preferring the 21 were making a mistake, suggesting that once they found themselves in the pressure of a race situation, they would also start running into the stability issues that he and Pedrosa were encountering with the 21.

After consultation with all of the riders, as well as Dorna and Loris Capirossi, who is acting as liaison between the tire company and Dorna, Bridgestone eventually elected to go with the wishes of the majority. The new tire will be introduced gradually, starting from Jerez, where the riders will be given two new spec tires to go along with the nine original spec tires they are currently using. From Silverstone, all of the front tires will be of the new spec.

Below is the official press release from Bridgestone, announcing and explaining the changes:
