    Yes. See:
    http://www.prolech.net/contact_us.asp?id=7&.html

I've gotten great responses from Shirley & Coco.
Maybe, and yes. I haven't found a way into the recovery menu (but I haven't looked either). However, Prolech did send me new firmware (named "MT-5001 software update accuracy 3", datestamp 10 Feb 2017) that's supposed to improve the GPS receiver accuracy & time to get a position fix. I've reflashed my unit to that firmware several times after messing it up. :)

I'd ask Prolech for the latest firmware -- and please let us all know what version you get!

If Prolech won't send you an update, contact me privately.

Hi. Finally I contacted with Hans than sent me a link for download a mt5001 image file. Also recommend me a program to flash it, named something like phoenixsuit... I don't know what ROM's version is because at last I could repair the ROM and no need to use the link.
Well if you choose to change the ROM and have a great experience, please let me know and I will contact with you

Well now I have more experience with this device and I can say that I see it a bit limited in performance, and that I have tried to put the minimum of programs that I want in a device like that
I hate to say but I changed this device with another with more capacity. Money difference? 70€
    Bye

They send me the same I have in my device, can you send me your"MT-5001 software update accuracy 3"? So I could compare and test my gps signal. My device take some minutes to take the signal.
    Thank you

My mt5001 stop working after i try reinstall back iGo (prev i use Garmin Viago). Unit not see GPS. I get clean stock firmware from Proltech, reinstall but no success =(

Anybody deal with it? Or maybe has alt firmware? I think is software issue.

Every day, a new problem =)
The device is no longer charged in the cradle. After a little research with a voltmeter, I found out that the DC-DC converter was dead. I opened the barrel with the converter and found that the coil fell off the board from the vibrations (the photo will be later).
It's good that I had 3A DC-DC converter. After replacing the converter with a new one (and filling it with glue), the device becomes faster charged! Previously, when working with Garmin Viago, even with the charging connected, the device gradually discharged. Now there is no problem with charging.

Old (The board was chipped during disassembly):

Hey, so can you check the voltage of the gps wires? it should be the red and black ones that you showed in the 2nd picture. 2nd any other markings on the gps board. wondering if its just a standard uart and we can adapt oh something like a ublox neo-m8n in place of the one shown. if so, might be able to get a better unit in there (m8n can do 3 constellations at 5HZ or 1 constellation at 10hz) and maybe even add an external powered antenna (i can dream right!)

i just got one and am really curious about cracking it open too and seeing how to mod it for better performance.

Good idea! I think we can try upgrade with something like this module:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-10Hz-VK28...196707?hash=item1c89653963:g:xTsAAOSw-0xYTUbL

I will examine the navigator again one of these days and check the voltage and dimensions.
Because Android sees this module through a standard serial port (E/gps_oem ( 433): gps_state_init /dev/ttyS2), it should be a standard UART.

so we have established it is a uart, that Is what i expected. the real question is still the voltage. I would really expect its 3.3V which the ublox will happily use. the gps module you linked to, or something like it, should work if the voltage is correct. also that connector could use an additional wire. it looks like they set the original module up to a full uart, but only listen to the output of the gps and do not send data back which is a shame. so if we connect the other pin we sould be able to send commands and date back to a gps module. there are a few ways to use the ublox where you can give it an aided start via the rx on the gps module.

i am looking at seeing if this fits: https://drotek.com/shop/en/511-ublox-neo-m8-gps-module.html

it has 3 really nice things going for it:
    1) can setup at 5V or 3.3V (as long as its not a 1.7 ttl connection this should work)
    2) can do initial setup via usb and not a usb to serial dongle
    3) has small onboard battery for gps module

i'm now waiting to receive the MT5001 too.

It's bigger then stock, i think it can not fit, because battery is near.
Today i order VK2828U8G5LF it have same size as stock and support 3.3V - 5V power source.

3.33 ~ 3.3 which is a standard supply voltage and TTL (I'd be a little surprised if its a 1.7 TTL). So it should mean a host of other gps receivers out there in the wild should work other than the ublox products. I would love to try a m8u, but the more I read on it, it seams it is tuned for car applications which is unfortunate. Be nice to have the dead reckoning for gps outages such as tunnels or urban canyons.

With that small size, a good investment would be an ftdi usb to ttl converter. Finding a module that small with a good sized antenna and usb port is not common. With the FTDI based converter, you can setup the GPS with a PC or MAC. the ublox is easy to configure via a PC or MAC.

i have a m8q based module on the way as it may go up to 10hz using 3 constellations (if the ublox docs are correct) plus its really small. I also got the same m8n you mentioned, but i am really unsure if a real m8n is under that shield but for the $ its worth the risk plus it has a larger antenna than the m8q i got.
