Ok guys, this is my intro to you all... I grew up riding desert bikes in So Cal, been on street bikes for a few yrs now. Really itching to get back in the dirt- when I can afford it a Tiger 800 will be in the garage along with my Victory. Did my first Saddle sore 1000 Saturday. It was actually not nearly as grueling as I thought it was going to be. Never felt like I was fighting sleep at all. Altho the last 1/2 hour I was REALLY ready for it to be over. There were two casualties- a bird & a squirrel. & a whole crapload of bugs. From Orange County Ca. south to San Deigo, then east thru Yuma to Tucson. Then north to Globe Az, & west thru Phoenix back home. Here are the stats- time started (first gas receipt) 3:26 am- time ended-11:06 pm. Besides gas & bathroom breaks I took a 20 minute breakfast break & a 1 hr 45 min dinner break visiting with friends in Phoenix. Odometer says 1058.6 miles. Google maps put it at 1036 I think. My speedo shows faster reading than my GPS, so the diff doesn't surprise me. Plus the back & forth on & off freeways for stops, so actually pretty accurate. Trip clock on the speedo shows 15 hrs 36 minutes of saddle time. Speedo also shows 41.8 avg mpg. & 72avg mph. Temps were 41* in a very wet fog at the start of the trip to 95* going to dinner in Phoenix. The winds east of Alpine Ca & near Palm Springs were wicked. Palm Springs is normally pretty heavy, but I think they were stronger than normal. Of course, that could have been because I had been on the road for so long already. It was ideal weather for the most part. I dont think I could have chosen a better day to do this. The desert was beautiful- wildflowers blooming everywhere, & the floor of the desert was so green it looked like there was grass growing on it. 80 - 85% of this route is freeway, but the rest of it (back way from Tucson to Phoenix) fun roads thru some pristene spots. The saguaro cactus in some spots are so dense it could be a forest. & the canyon west of Globe is awesome. Would post pics but it seems as if I am not allowed. A minimum post count before you can maybe?
