About 5 weeks ago, my friend was in a terrible accident on his way home from work. He rides a 2012 Concours ZX14. A woman driving her SUV made a left turn in front of him as he was passing through a very busy intersection.

Result: her bumper crunched his knee against the frame/engine of his bike. His boot came off, with his lower leg still in it. :huh He remembers trying to pick up his boot and saw his foot and lower leg still in there...

His femur broke in a few spots, and his hip/pelvis got smashed. Now he's got a long titanium rod inserted inside the bone of his femur, running its entire length. It's screwed into his hip at the top, and more bolts holding the bottom portion of his femur together. His lower leg was severed just below the knee.

The good news is that he's on the mend. It'll be a long, bumpy road but he'll get there.

I found out about his accident just a few hours before I was due to fly out of town on a business trip, so I rushed out to the news stand and picked him up 1/2 dozen motorcycle magazines to help him pass the time as he lay in his hospital bed. My wife thought that was dumb, but he's a true motorcyclist.

    Damn.

I hope he heals as well and as quickly as possible.
That is hard to look at, much less live with -

how much would you say a leg is worth to you ?

This should be asked of the guilty party with a chainsaw in your hand.

Sucks to hear for sure. But with prothstetics now days since his leg was amputated below the knee we won't even walk with a limp and he will be able to ride again.

I have to many friends with fake limbs nowadays

Yeah it'll probably be several months before he's even able to put weight on a prosthetic leg, but he hopes to ride again by next summer.

What is the appropriate criminal charge for the woman who negligently hit him? Is there a vehicular assault charge in your locality?

The accident happened in Vancouver, and apparently, the driver of the SUV has yet to be charged with anything.

That's rough, thanks for reminding us how quickly things can go wrong and how vulnerable we are on our machines...

Quick healing, and thankfully his head is ok (those are the injuries that never heal)...

    Oh man that is awful.
But decent job on the surgery.
Hope for a fast not very painful recovery.

    :huh wtf ... :huh

She should be jailed for the rest of her life ...

I had a friend who lost his right lower leg in an accident and he used to ride with a prosthetic leg afterwards... Back home I started going on foot for the last couple of years and use the car whenever I go somewhere, I now only use bikes either on the racetrack or in the mountains... It is really a jungle out there :cry

Wishing him all the best for a good recovery

A very stark reminder about how fragile the human body is when it meets a few tons of moving steel.

    Best wishes for your friend.

Charges are pointless, my wife was killed while riding, the woman who hit her got a 160 dollar fine. What does that do for me? Sweet dick, that's what. What is important is the procurement of a good lawyer, as your friend will be financially tied down for the rest of his life dealing with prosthetics, physio, work time lost etc. When I read of these accidents, I can't help but think that many of us as bikers aren't reading the invisible signs that say we are entering a danger zone. Kind of like the pedestrian who pushes the button at a cross walk, then walks out without looking for traffic and gets hit and killed. Was he right? Sure he was, but it didn't save his life. Your spidey senses have to always be alert, or else. Not saying that is what happened to your friend, but busy intersections are always a place where I am on high alert.
