What do you guys think? Any thoughts about this plan? I have about two weeks before I wanted to get back to Acapulco. Any places to stop, things to see, roads to take... or not?

I would ditch both coastal routes in favor of the nearby highlands. Also, I would definitely ride the Mex 175 from either P. Escondido or Oaxaca City all the way to Veracruz.

Sit on a bench on the zocalo in Oaxaca and sip on a flask of mezcal, this will reorient whatever plans you have.

Yup, what those guys said. I did the loop around to Palenque and San Cristobal on my recent trip. While I enjoyed that part of the country I came to the conclusion they weren't worth a week of my trip.

Hwy 175 is fantastic. I really enjoyed Orizaba with a side trip to Zongolica. And you can find some spectacular riding and scenery working your way down to 175.

Spending extra time in Oaxaca is a no brainer.

Well, I wanted to make it to Palenque, hence the coastal roads. Is the place worth visiting, my girlfriend wanted to see the pyramids and we have 4 weeks in Mexico? The plan was / is:

    - first week in Mexico City
    - second week travel / pyramids
    - third week whatever
    - fourth week in Acapulco

Then she is flying from DF and I am riding back to ATL

    Any suggestions?

Pyramids are Teotihuacan, 45 minutes from D.F. Mayan ruins in Palenque are definitely worth seeing but are pretty far away and its a very hot ride down there. If I were you, I'd focus on colonial cities like San Miguel, Guanajuato, Morelia. Zacatecas is very interesting and fun too (eat at Garufa). Oaxaca and the trip down to the Coast is a must. At least a couple days in Oaxaca to sample some good food and hang a bit. The route to Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido and back to Oaxaca can be done by an excellent loop (175 down and 131 back). Then the aforementioned 175 route over to Tuxpan (close to Veracruz) is a must do ride. Unless your girl is an ironman competitor, she will probably tire of the heat pretty quickly. My 2 centavos. Have a great trip.

This is good advice. :thumb Take the coastal areas in small doses, hot and humid is hard on a bike.

The Highlands are spectacular and much cooler. Smaller towns, easier to get a feel for. Mexico City has some amazing stuff but you'll need a very good guide book or local knowledge to find the best. The place is massive. I worked there 2 months so got to know it fairly well. I liked it a lot! ... but had EXPERT guides ... and a driver. Mex. City is TOUGH if you don't know your way.

I would only spend a few days, then head to the Highlands. Do a loop and back down to the coast. Puerto Escondido /Angel pretty cool, great coastline ... will be HOT, Humid and maybe rainy now .... and for the next 4 or 5 months. I would skip Acapulco all together. It's dangerous and a garbage dump. Go North or South ... and you will be much happier. Acapulco SUCKS!

    Ride safe down there! :freaky

MEX 175 is epic motorcycle ride.
Puebla is beautiful and you can ride to a lot of Aztec and precolonial ruins. From Coatzacalcos take the coastal road all the way to Papantla.

I was sharing some of these comments with my wife. Her first question was; "so when are you going back ?". My answer was sometime between now and fall. Gotta quit looking at these threads.
