My (mini)adventure bike (2002 Honda XR200)

    Ever since I discovered adventure rider, I had decided that I wanted a dual sport. I had no money available to spend, ( I was just married in May) but I had things to barter. I put up an ad in craigslist and somebody sent me a message about an XR200.

    I've been told that it's too small for me, 5'9" 230 lbs, but others have said don't worry about it. I rode it and loved it. The first problem was it's not a dual sport, it's a dirtbike. That's ok, though, beggars can't be choosers.

    The XR200 has a lighting coil, so I can make it a dual sport. I have ordered the Baja Designs Headlight/Taillight kit (with new wife approval) so I will have a hi/low beam headlight, a taillight, and a brake light w/ switch. Now all I need for Michigan to be street legal is a turn signals (2 arms), horn, a mirror, and DOT approved tires. From what I've heard, the cops never look at the tires. :)

    I put a set of Weaver Leather saddlebags on it to keep tools, extra gas, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, etc. I used a ram mount set up to put my Garmin Etrex Venture HC on the handle bars.

    For now, i can still ride on the side of the road on certain roads in my town and surrounding counties here in Mid Michigan. :)

    Any suggestions welcome for ways to make it better on the cheap or needed farkles.

    Don't get caught up in the size thing, I've had rediculous fun on small bikes.

    I'd wrap that exhaust with heat wrap if you plan on leaving those saddle bags like that.

    I use my arms for turn signals too, and I have a little bicycle bell for a "horn". I'd look for a bar end style mirror and mount it inboard on the bars so when you drop the bike it won't break it. Try looking for a used tank in the flea market or on ebay, and you will have a great little bike. People have ridden smaller stuff around the world.

    You will love that bike on the trails. Just be careful in traffic, and have fun!

    The bag is on top of the side number plate, it should be ok. I've got the bicycle horn. ;)

    why do i need a used tank? as a back up? or do you mean a bigger one?

    Ive had a XR 200
    Great Bike, tons of fun!

    I would invest in riding gear if you dont have any/much.
    Helmet, boots, glove, jacket, etc.

    Possibly gear it up a lil bit higher for the road.

    Most important thing; get out there and enjoy the adventure!

    I've got some leather boots, tourmaster textile pants, a textile jacket from LeatherUp, some leather gloves, and a Bell full face helmet (It's what I use when I ride my Cm250).

    yeah I meant a bigger tank. Thats a personal preference kind of thing.

    Seems like I'm constantly running out of gas. I like having a huge amount of fuel though, because I know I'm dumb enough to not stop at that gas station that I should have stopped at.

    I didn't even notice the mirror in the pics. Oops.

    My guess is the only thing that will likely need attention for street use that you've not mentioned is the gearing - chances are its geared pretty low for dirt and will be quite wound out at street speeds. If this turns out to be the case (I've never ridden an XR200 on the street, or even one with a spedometer), your best bet will likely be to start by finding the largest front sprocket you can and fit that (should be under $20).

    Its a little hard to tell from the pics, but you might want to check that the saddle bags aren't going to hit the swingarm when the rear suspension is fully compressed. Perhaps mount them so they ride a bit higher on the bike.

    The promoto rear rack looks nice, I have one on my DR and like it quite well.

    As the others said, riding gear is really important and likely more critical than bike parts, start with that if you don't already have everything (boots, pants, jacket, gloves, helmet etc).

    My XR200R has 13/47 sprockets and the only other front sprocket I have found is a 12(let me know if you find a 14)RM MC has rear sprockets down to 40 and I think I might try 13/40 with a 100 link chain. Currently raps out at 60 with 45 bieng the max for comfort and vibes. Love the bike for sure. Would love to see the BD kit when you get it on. Enjoy the ride!

    Yeah, it's got a huge rear sprocket. I don't actually plan on doing any MAJOR trips, probably mostly around town, riding to the local trails and on the trails. Once I get to the local trail system, a street legal bike can literally stay on the trail through multiple counties. So, I'm thinking that will be fun. I don't think I'll be crossing the country with it, but who knows, I'll keep an open mind...;) Plus it'll be great for a zombie revolution or post apocalyptic warzone :)

    I didn't have much to do today and was getting antsy about working on the XR200 (waiting for the light kit), so I did a super penny tech rear rack. It's made of 1/2" PVC pipe and foam insulation. I know, it's not the most sturdy material to use, but I am without a lot of tools like welders, benders, etc. After I constructed it and mounted it, I was actually surprised at how sturdy it was. At the lower speeds I probably plan on driving, around town, to and from the trail, it will probably work fine for sleeping bags, sleeping pads, tent, etc. I modified 2 90 elbows to bolt onto the fender mount. The middle bottom rail of the rack rests on the fender. I glued it all up, let it dry, sprayed it with some metallic silver spray paint to match the frame, and applied the self stick pipe insulation. I had gotten one of the nets for 1$ at the dollar store. The pvc and hardware totaled about 13$.

    While I've been anxiously awaiting my Baja Design headlight/taillight setup from Motorcycle Superstore, I found out I received a 40$ credit from them to use during September. I figured it was like 40 bucks off an order of at least a couple hundred bucks, but it's literally like cash when you plug in the code. Just thought I'd give everybody a little heads up. You do have to pay the $6.99 shipping though. I put it to good use and ordered an O'neal fender tool bag and sticker set for the xR.

    Hooray! My Baja Designs Kit came in along with the UNI filter. I installed the BD kit, but not the filter, as i don't have the correct jets for the carb yet.

    The kit went together pretty good, except the brake switch came with a spring that was way too long and a bulb with a burnt out hi-beam bulb. Nothing that an email to BD won't solve hopefully.

    Oh yeah, the best part, my ADV stickers came in!

    Once I get the new bulb and spring, I should be able to call up the local cop and get it inspected to make it road legal, so I can take it on the MCCCT trails.

    I finished it up this afternoon. I called Baja Designs and they are sending out a new bulb. They say that the spring is supposed to work, but there is no way it will where they are saying it should go. I figured out a different spot to mount it, but I'm not 100% happy with it.

    I've only had it out on some back dirt roads, but I really enjoyed myself. I don't think it would be very fun trying to do 55 on a paved highway, but that's not the kind of adventure I'm looking for. After I've been on this bike it makes my CM250 feel like a fat hog. :)
