    Not for the lead, you didn't.

    When the sport establishes a committee to make passing easier, you know it has a problem. No-one in F1 denies that passing is almost impossible.

    Inferior cars hold up faster cars every single race. It's absurd. Win the pole, win Turn 1 and barring a mishap you'll almost always win the race. That leaves two hours of :snore

    Why?

    It would have been refreshing had the FIA not approved the Brawn double decker diffusers.

    It's generally agreed that since the FIA approved them mid-season, and the big teams adopted them, passing became as difficult as in previous years.

    All that time, all that money redesigning F1 cars specifically to make passing easier... and they still can't.

    Since F1 killed traction control a couple of years ago, the cars definitely step out more. It's cool. :D

    How many different teams have won a race in the last two seasons? Six, seven? How close is the field today compared to 10 years ago? Inferior cars are one second slower, maybe two seconds unless they are carrying different fuel loads, different tires, damage, etc.

    First of all, you're including a lot of rain races from last year and a couple from this year. Throw those out and suddenly the winner's circle isn't as diverse.

    Secondly, only two teams were in it last year. Same this year.

    Third, how is it exciting if there's only a one second difference between the best and worst qualifiers? From a racing perspective, the only benefit is that Q1 and Q2 are more exciting. Great. All those expensive rules changes made qualifying more exciting. Super. By the way, that's a one year aberration. Next year, assuming the rules don't change much, the wild card benefit of a major rules change will have been played and will be gone.

    Fourth, we were talking about passing. You too. I notice you dropped that part of the discussion in this post. :lol3

    Firstly, apart from the McLaren and Ferrari crew, Vettel, Alonso and Kubica all won last year. Weather plays a part every weekend, some cars/drivers cope with temp changes and precipitation better than others and it detracts not one single bit from any drivers' victory. And IIRC only Vettel's win was somewhat rain related, but he was fast in the dry that day too.

    Secondly BMW were not also-rans in 2008. Kubica had a lot of podiums and was in title contention for much of the season. Renault picked up two wins, not a fluke. And for 2009 you can't write off teams like McLaren, Ferrari and Renault for race wins. I wouldn't bet against Williams taking a win either. It's a very competative field.

    Thirdly, the tightness of the grid is indicative of how close the teams are to each other now. I remember when backmarkers struggled to be within 7-10 seconds of pole. I mentioned the closeness of the field as an explanation for why you don't see lots of easy passes. No one is that much better that it makes it easy for them to pass.

    Fourthly, F1 has never had a lot of passing, and I don't believe it needs to make passing easy in order to attract fans. A pass should be hard. It's more meaningful that way. A paucity of passing does not equate to a lack of excitement. Just as in soccer where a lack of goals doesn't necessarily make for a boring game.

    Some of the people that make that comment seem to think that it takes more talent to turn right than left. I'm pretty sure these guys that do so well on the left turns could get a handle on rights as well. I think the idea of the oval was to keep the action close to the spectators, so that wherever the cars are, spectators (the ones that make this financially possible) can see them.

    I prefer the road courses, but oval racing can be entertaining sometimes.

    They should have never limited speeds on the ovals.
    Wouldn't it be more enjoyable for fans and drivers without restrictor plates?

    I understand about keeping the sport somewhat safer.
    But its racing for fucks sake, the drive to go faster, set lap records, etc, etc.

    Bummer announced last month for Dakar:
    Yesterday, the organizers of the Dakar Rally announced that the motorcycle portion of the annual event would consist of 450cc
    motorcycles beginning in 2010 with a grace period of one year in which the bigger bikes could still be used with restrictors.
    Today, KTM (the winner of the last eight Dakar Rallies) announced that they were withdrawing their efforts from the race.
