The Nashville Metropolitan Police Dept has started issuing Honda Ruckus scooters to bicycle officers as an alternative, and the officers love 'em!

Strangely enough, they are issuing them to officers who do not have motorcycle endorsements. I do hope they are at least taking a familiarization course! The story (on Nashville's News Channel 5 WTVF) claims that a MC endorsement isn't required for 50cc scoots. That's news to me. :dunno

We've been told many times that anything with two wheels and a motor requires a M endorsement on the license. The state DMV website never gets specific, but I did find that Segways can be operated everywhere but in the interstates....

What do the former bicycle officers patrol on them?

Downtown, parks, urban areas. The same areas they worked on bicycles, but with a bit more range. They seem to be spending a bit less time moving, more time talking to folks (everyone wants to see the scoots), but covering the same areas. I think that the increased face time is great!

The real reason? Donuts. You ever try eating one while riding a mountain bike?

in texas 50cc and under not able to shift and not able to exeed 30mph does not require an m.

Ruckus is able to exeed 30 mph so would need an m.

The TCA is that, in order to operate a motorized vehicle on the streets of TN, an M endorsement is required. If, however, they never take the scoot off of the sidewalk and "walk" it across street crossings, they can operate <50 cc without endorsement or vehicle license.

They need to take a frickin' class and just get over it!
