Tomorrow a few inmates and I are headed out on a 3.5 day trip from Charlotte, NC to Portland, ME and back for a lobster dinner.

The group is made up of myself, JoeyBones, JMforPres, and SansCage.

I have three personal goals in mind:
    1. Ride the longest distance I've ever ridden in one day (day one), a SS1000 will likely be next if it goes well
    2. Ride in 6 new states (CT, NH, VT, ME, RI, MA)
    3. Eat lobster in Maine

2100+ miles in 4 days. Slabbing it hard to Albany, NY on day one, a more leisurely day 2 and 3, and slabbing it hard home on day 4. Though this isn't my preferred style of travel, none of us can take much time off from work, so you do what you've gotta do.

Day one: Charlotte to Albany via I-81, ~775 miles
Day two: Albany to Dimillio's in Portland, ME - scenic route through Vermont TBD, ~400 miles
Day three: Portland, ME to "Somewhere South of Maryland" ~450 miles
Day four: Somewhere to Charlotte, NC, ~450 miles

Montreal was on the route, but because of the gov't shutdown one of the group members can't get his passport. Oh well, more time to enjoy VT and ME.

This will be my first time travelling with a group, and the longest i've travelled in such a short time. I must admit i'm dreading the ride on day one all the way to Albany, but JoeyBones keeps reminding me to look at it like 4 gas stops. Just 4 gas stops. Easy peasy.

Pics, stories, and of course LOBSTER to come.

Subscribed! Ride safe. Wish I could come along for the ride. (My company's Annual Meeting is on Saturday and I have to be present. Hopefully, things will go smoothly and I can ride on Sunday.)

About mile 500 you are going to start thinking: "I wonder how fast I can go before the police stop me....I just want to be there!"

    Be safe brother!

Epic! Let me know when you are in town!

First, I would skip the floating outhouse known as Dimillos, and go to the Portland Lobster Company instead - it's right down the street.

Also coming east through New Hampshire, you should take the Kancamagus highway, and then Hurricane mountain road. You can thank me later.

Nice thing about Portland, plenty of motorcycle only parking.

Just finished packing. It won't be easy to fall asleep tonight - never seems to be for me before a trip. 5:30am will come early.

Thanks for all who are tagging along already.

You guys probably already have about 4 hours of riding under your belt. It was a nice crisp morning here in Charlotte. Safe travels today! I'm totally jealous - I've never been to Maine, and my weekend is going to consist of camping out surrounded by hundreds of cub scouts :uhoh:lol3

We've made it to Winchester, VA - almost halfway to Albany. Has rained pretty much the whole way so far and no signs of it stopping. At about 55 degrees, we're not having a lot of fun but that's life.

And to think, I almost didn't bring rain gear...

Wow. I would love to do this sometime. I'm in Charlotte and just started getting into ADVing.

Although, I don't know how I'd like a 775mi run on the Highway with my WRR. I would want to kill myself by the end of the day.

For what it's worth, lobster is selling for $2.25 per lb. off the boat, I've heard.
It would be more trouble and take more time, but, imagine ,say $10.00 worth of criters apiece, a big pot from a thrift store of boiling water over a driftwood fire and a case of beer. Throw in some taters and corn , melt some butter , mmmmmmmmmmm. Party on !

    BBB let's go.

I've done 700 in a day on my nighthawk, but towards the end I had to get off every 70 to 80 miles.

You guys know I'm following along. Hate that I had to bail at the last minute but after hearing about the 775 mile romp through 55 degree rain all day well.....I might be lying if I said that now!

Good luck and keep the reports coming!

Well folks, we came up short of our original goal for the day, but after 687 miles from my door to the Days Inn just south of Middletown, NY, I still feel accomplished. My longest ride ever in one day, still, and all but about 40 miles of it was in the rain. Left my house at 5:45am and arrived here around 9pm. That makes for a long day, especially with your boots full if water and your gloves sopping wet since hour one.

Tomorrow it will all be worth it when we sink our teeth into that lobster...

Side note - I will say the Russell Day Long seat on my FJR is probably one of the best purchases I've made in my lifetime. I have at least 20k miles of riding experience, and this is the ONLY time my butt hasn't hurt after a few hundred miles of riding. Amazing.
