We will be riding across 50 from Nevada into Cali next week then up to OR and WA. I've heard about fires near Yosemite, any other suggestions where to go or avoid as far as the fires we're hearing about?
Also I can't recall where I read the ride account (maybe Salvadori in Rider?) but it was somewhere near the very NE corner of California. I believe the roads (maybe gravel) took him into NV or Oregon then back to remote basin area with a wonderful view. Any ideas where this would be? Any other suggestions are appreciated. We'll be on a Wee and GS.

What are trying to avoid, the smoke? It is a big fire and only 60% contained. I live less than 20 miles from it and get a daily dosage.

I don't think you can escape it, but it depends which way the wind is blowing and usually raises or clears by afternoon.

I don't know what route you are looking for, but hwy 447 off 50/80 interchange takes you to Cedarville in NE Cal via Gerlach, Nev. County rd. 1 North to Adel Oregon turns to gravel at Ft Bidwell.

A map of your route would be helpful.

If you take 50 to Lake Tahoe, then take hwy 89 south all the way to 395 (some great views to the east off 89). After you get to 395, turn around and ride 89 (monitor Pass) back to Hwy 4. Take 4 west to 49 north. Then either take 88 (Carson Pass) back to 89 and then north on 89 past Lake Tahoe and points north, or stay on Hwy 49 all the way until it meets up with 89 north of Lake Tahoe. Hwy 49 goes through Gold Country and some neat old towns, but it can also be busy with traffic.

Not sure what the smoke situation will be on this route, maybe some of the locals can comment.

Just back from Bridgeport. Smoke is very bad, although wind shifts can provide brief breaks. Bad all the way to Reno. I am not sure how far north. Sonora Pass closed

Why is 108 closed?, It is not on Cal Trans lists. 120 through Yosemite is closed due to fire personnel doing some suppression work. That is supposed be lifted after today, but best to check.

Thanks for all the good advice and Steens Mt loop may be what I had in my mind.
But we're now thinking of heading from Reno NW toward the coast and 96 north to Oregon. 36 and 299 appear to be nice and we've not ridden either, is one preferred? I'd like to do both and include 3 as well but I don't think we'll have the extra time. The reason I'm thinking 96 is we've done 101 and the awesome redwoods.

Well that's what I'm doing, trying to plan our route.:D One problem is we can't allot too much time in Cali this time because we want to spend a few days each in WA and OR. We have ridden some in CA zig zagging from 49 on 120, 108, 4, 88, and some of 89 and had a blast!

We’ve been to Crater Lake in OR, I’ve ridden through Hells Canyon and some around Redmond (3 Sisters). Not much at all in WA, just east from Spokane. We will save Seattle and Olympia for the next trip. So we’ll have about 6 days to ride up through OR and WA ,beginning around I-5. Then we have to head east. We want to ride some of the OR coast, which I’ve heard is beautiful, and see Mts St Helen and Rainier. Other than that just scenic, twisty roads.

From Reno you could just take 89 north to 36 west as far as you want to go. All of 36 west of I5 is great, and preferable to 299 imho, although 299 has some good riding as well. If you decide to do this, then you might want to ride into Lassen NP as it's on this route. I would just ride into the park, go about halfway through the park, then turn around and come back out the same way you went in (the southern part of the park has better scenery and this will keep you on 36).

3 and 96 are both good roads. You can ride 3 north off 36 and find yourselves just south of the OR border. Or you could ride 36 to Mad River and take South Fork Mt/Titlow Hill Rd (remote ridge road) north to 299 and then take 96 north.

Is this the road from Bridgeville on 36 to Korbel on 299? (It's unmarked on my map)

The one you're seeing is Kneeland Rd. It's dirt most of the way north, and a great road if you want some dirt (although I seem to recall it was gated at the bottom last time I went by, but not sure about that .... last time I was through there we went north on Redwood House Rd, which is also dirt and a little west of Kneeland Rd).

More precisely, South Fork Mt Rd heads north off Hwy 36 6.6 miles east of Mad River. Closer to Mad River (where the Burger Bar is a great stop btw) is Forest Service Rd 1. It starts up the ridge right next to the salmon colored church at Mad River. FS1 and South Fork Mt meet about 8 miles up the ridge.

More simply, just look for this church and head up the road next to it.

The Burger Bar... fancy huh..... :rofl

This is some great advice and you will not go wrong no matter which roads you decide on.
I would offer a couple of alternatives. I would probably skip Lassen NP unless you wanted to ride all the way through to 299. Take Hwy 36 west from Red Bluff to about 10 miles past Platina. Take Wildwood Road to Highway 3. There is a foundation and gas pumps there- all that remains from a burnt down building. Take 299 to Weaverville and pick up Hwy 3 going north again. Stay on 3 until Fort Jones in Scott Valley. Take the Scott River Rd. to Hwy 96. At Happy Camp take the road to O'Brien, OR. Take 199 to Crescent City, CA. You will pass through Redwoods on 199.
