Need a spark plug boot/cap

    I have this old boat with a Volvo 4cyl engine in it. Tonight one of the plug wire boots broke. They're straight plug caps that attach to the plug on the threaded terminal of the plug. There's a little piece of spring steel in there that clicks down onto the threads of the plug terminal. I need one of these and can't seem to find them anywhere. Yes, I can buy a wire with ends on it that attach to the top of the plug that has the nut piece threaded on, but I was hoping to keep all the plug wires the same for now.

    Any ideas??

    First, buy a proper automotive ignition strip/crimp tool that looks pretty much exactly like this:

    You can buy replacement spark plug boots most anywhere, but I would suggest to see if you can just pull your old boot apart, pick the broken wire out, enlarge the terminal and re-crimp. Use some WD40 on the boot to help it come apart. If you oil them they slide apart pretty easily but if you try doing it dry it will usually fight you tooth and nail and maybe even commit hara-kiri instead of letting you win.

    Are your boots rubber or bakelite? Also, if the connector is messed up you can thread a spark plug barrel nut and just use a conventional push on connector on that plug.

    They're Bakelite and they screw into the center of the wire. No crimps. I know I can change the ends. I'd prefer to find the same end as I have now if possible.

    I've done boats and even rebuilt carbs for something like you have. Don't remember exactly what it was now. Was twenty years ago.

    Nobody has yet told you what it is you need. I find this pretty standard around boats. People think they can do shoddy work on boats for some reason. Is this electronic ignition? If not it is pretty easy. Measure the ohms of one of your working plug wires and make sure you end up with something close to that. If it is electronic ignition I suggest you get an OEM plug wire and if possible a full set.

    The function of the wire is much more important than what it looks like.

    And if these wires are old enough to start falling apart I suggest you put some money in it before you get beyond paddle distance from shore.

    Yes, test all the wires with the Ohmmeter. Just found a bad one on my bike, still tested OK when the wire was bent as it sits in operating position, sure did not when I layed it straight and tested again.:wink:

    Then I rechecked all of them and found another one acting that way.:wink:

    I've seen NGK caps at Fleet Farm. Is it a resistor cap? Lots of variables man.

    Thanks...I did look there. All they have are for terminal stud not threaded terminal. I'll probably just have to get a new wire and thread a stud on the plug and call it good.

    No idea...there is no need for resistor on this boat so anything will work.

    I hear ya...I may just spring for a set of wires and be done. These wires ohm out perfectly so I hate to throw them away.

    mebby a automotive wrecking yard... an old one... or possibly a vintage Volvo site. That cap is probably the same as what came on the 544, 122, 144, and 1800 series cars with B1800 and B2000 engines. The same engines were adapted and used extensively in marine applications.

    No problem.

    Quite a bit of the stuff I deal with takes connectors like the first one in the post. It's been a while since I used the type you need but all that stuff is still available.


    Sierra is dropping stuff from the catalogs every month like most automotive parts places.

    I have a parts drawer full of those, but...they will not work on this engine. I need a 3" + long straight connector to fit down onto the plug.
