Need local Advice: Riding 2 Up near Lake City and CB

    First of all, hats off to you for being in the middle of riding paradise! Since I was 15, I've been riding in the high Rockies every chance I could get, which has never been enough!

    This trip is a bit different, as I will have a passenger aboard my F800GS equipped with new TKC's. My girl has never seen the Rockies before, and I'm looking forward to showing her all it has to offer, and seeing it all a new through her beautiful eyes. But I'm a bit nervous about her safety, as I've never ridden 2 up on rough terrain before, and with a 30" inseam, I could see getting into a precarious position with the added weight (no honey, you're not fat). Also not sure how she'll react to the altitude, especially if I make her get off and walk up the mountain in her boots!

    We're staying in Almont 2 nights, and the plan is to go thru Taylor to Tincup, Cumberland Pass, Pitkin, Alpine Tunnel, but not sure about Hancock Pass over to St Elmo, or Tincup pass for that matter. As I remember, parts of these weren't a cake walk even riding my 250 solo.

    I do see a route from Pitkin back to Almont via Ohio > 771 to Gold Creek > 478 West to 743 > 743 West to Almont. Looks like 478 follows a nice ridge. Anyone familiar with this route? Any others in this area to recommend?

    Next we're headed to Lake City via Blue Mesa Dam > 867 South. This is a great, easy route by the way.

    From Lake City, I'm planning to head up Cinnamon Pass until she starts screaming. Hoping to at least get to American Basin. If we dont get over the pass, will likely go around and do the same for Engineer pass. May also head East from Lake City and check out SlumGulion and Spring Creek Pass.

    Any suggestions on other fairly easy routes up high near Lake City?

    I saw 3 guys headed over Hancock pass today with fully loaded bikes, 2 ktm 690s and a Husky 650. I think Tin Cup pass would be easier myself.

    About 12 miles north of Lake City is the Alpine Plateau road. Not sure the mileage, maybe 30 or so? But it takes you to hiway 50 just west of Blue Mesa dam. Its mellow dirt and has some decent views, might be a great warm up for the higher/rougher passes.

    Yes, that's the route we're taking from CB to Lake City! I stumbled ointo it a few years back. Great Ride.

    Not sure of your timing, but Highway 149 is closed due to fires.

    Tin Cup might be too much two up.
    Cumberland is easy and makes a sweet loop if you stay on the dirt all the way to the east side of Monarch. There's a series 3 or 4 easy passes.

    It is not closed for its entire length, just from South Fork north to Creed (mile 1-22). It is open from Creed north to US50.

    Cebola (Co Rd 27) off Hwy 149
    Los Pinos Pass

    Here is a pick of Lost Canyon Trail just above Altmont. I believe this is one of the roads you were interested in. Most of the Lost Canyon Trail that I rode (I started in Gunnison) was a well graded easy 2wd vehicle road , the last portion near and above Altmont was a little more demanding (suitable for ATV's, motorcycles and narrow jeeps). For a motorcycle it is still easier than Cinnamon or Engineer, but narrower.

    Tincup, Hancock, and Tomichee would strike me as being decently tough on a big bike. Like many of these passes in CO, most of the routes are pretty darned easy until you get to the 1, 2, or 3 relatively challenging spots. Of those 3, I think Tincup is the easiest, but a big bike like yours with a passenger has a couple of rough rocky sections that will give you grief IMO. The Alpine Tunnel and Cumberland Pass are easily accessed from the Taylor area without hitting those 3 rougher passes. However, going to St. Elmo from Taylor might be better achieved by a long ride over Cottonwood Pass.

    Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. We wound up renting a 4 wheeler at Taylor Res for her to take up to Tincup Pass. $179 for 4 hours; much cheaper than a new pannier, or a Care Flight for that matter.

    Also, we made it over Cinnamon Pass 2 up no problem. Got to hand it to my gal, she's a trooper!
