Need R100GSPD Electrical Help

    Here's the deal - was out riding the last couple of days and all of the sudden I start getting wildly fluctuating readings on my tach. All of the sudden it would drop my 200 RPM.

    Then, Yesterday, the starter begins having a hard time turning over the engine.

    Alternator?

    Diode Board?

    Battery?

    Loose nut behind the bars?

    Just an idea where to start would be helpful

    Here we go!
    Contact Motorrad Elektrik and buy their Airhead electrical manual/flyer and then do a search for airhead electrical in the Old School Rides forum here and also look at the airheads.org website. There is a lot of information on similar problems in both places.
    Does the red charging light come on when you switch the ignition on BEFORE you hit the starter motor?
    Have you check all of the fuses lately?
    Have you had the front cover off recently?
    Has the bike gotten wet lately?
    Now that the weather's changing you might want to yank the battery connections and ground to the transmission and power line to the starter motor and grease them with dielectric compound or silicone grease.

    It takes some time to sleuth but these bikes are well know and pretty simple when it comes down to it....be patient, you'll figure it out!

    Question 1. Do BOTH red lights (oil and battery) lights come on before you start the bike? (Key on - kill switch on - engine not turning over)

    If the battery light does not come on then you should not be riding the bike. Those red lights are important - check them frequently.

    I lost my tach and taillight due to a short from a frayed wire passing through the airbox area. I didn't find and fix it (mechanic did) but it was that simple. Didn't have starting problems but its something to think about.

    And now for the details........probably a mouse chewed through it because there was also a mouse nest in the airbox.
