Need your opinion on this piston

    I am in the process of rebuilding a KRS. Bought an engine and it wasn't exactly what was represented so took it completely apart and am rebuilding it. This piston was either dropped or something was dropped on it. So question is it good enough to be used or should I buy a new one?

    The nick seems to be below the sealing/oil rings so you should be okay. I wouldn't use it because I am one anal bast---. The little bit of vibration or unbalance would have me regretting the damn piston as soon as I felt something and would crack it open again to rip it out.

    So I would get a new one, but only because I only do the same job once!

    The nick in the body looks acceptanble to me, as long as you remove any sharp edges.


    From my screen though, it looks like there is a nick on the upper surface of the top ring groove. If it is in fact a nick, I would reject this piston. :hair

    If it appears to be a ding from handling I'd use it. Make sure there is no raised area around the ding. (like the rim of a crater) Might need a little work with a riffler and some paper to take that off. Only the lower part of the skirt runs on the bore, some fancy pistons have even eliminated the area where your ding is located.

    If, on the other hand, it appears to be a void from a casting, I'd be more wary.

    When pistons fail, it is usually at the crown, or the ring grooves. Only if they were porly fitted, or EXTRAMLY worn will you ever see a skirt failure.
