New Bike! New Hack! '83R65/Watsonian: how will they fit?

    Just bought the bike and the car yesterday, and now I want to know how big a pain it will be to mate up the two.

    The Watsonian car was originally on a 1978 R100/7 tug, and as I said before, the new bike is an '83 R65.

    Will the car and tug mate up perfectly, or will I have to jimmy with the bits to make everything line up?

    The R65 has a smaller frame, weaker backbone and lighter flywheel as well as being gutless in comparison with a R100. I'd definitely look at a substantial subframe and try and find a R45 FD (probably as rare as rocking-horse shit in the U.S.). I doubt if a R65 and Watsonian would be strong enough to pull the skin off a rice pudding....

    Not too helpful without pictures...

    The R65 will probably move the tub as long as you stay out of the mountains. You may need to use a lot of clutch to get it moving. Fortunately, those engines rev out pretty good. You may want wider bars, too.

    You WILL need a subframe.

    The R65 and R100 main frames are almost identical- you can probably use the same mounts. Top speed will be down 5-10 MPH from the R100, but it should still cruise at 60-65 all day... Mine does!

    Wastaonia is an good car to mount. It should mount up easy.
    I did one a Wastonia to a Triumph new Bonni all went well had to fab a bracket to get around the exhaust.

    I got the bike mocked up to the car yesterday, and with the help of Tom Ridyard, the front mounts went on pretty smoothly.

    The rear mounts- that's a different story.

    Does anyone have pictures of exactly how the rear mounts mate up to the Airhead frame?

    Also... here's a photo of the car and bike mocked up together...

    the rear mounts don't mate up to the BMW frame, at least they shouldn't. Your front and rear bottom mounts should be carried on a sub frame. The rear bike frame should be heavily braced at the top rear mount to prevent flexing.

    Some mounting kits have carried the bottom rear mount on a heavy plate bolted to the footpeg carrier. I have seen this arrangement flex badly. I prefer a subframe consisting of a heavy bar attached to the motor mounts and perhaps the centerstand pivot carrying both bottom mounts. The struts can be mounted to clamps if you are careful about alignment and use good quality clamps, but the rear frame loop needs re-enforcing.
    A better approach might be to bring an arm up from the subframe behind the bottom rear mount to a clamp under the seat some where or at the top shock mount, similar to what Jay did with my Tiger

    No body answers e-mails on the weekend- those ferners don't understand the workaholic folks in the US. I've dealt with English bike folks- they get around to the e-mail when they think of it. Might be more efficacious to just give them a call. I think there's a 5 or 6 hour time difference -later, so call in the morning.

    (Keep in mind that this is a Ural tub on the left of the tug.)

    On this the upper rear mount is attached on the mainframe bend just forward of the seat catch & subframe attachment point. Its also a good point to fit a crossbar, left to right, between the upper subframe attachments.

    The lower rear mount, on this, goes to the area (pillion footpeg & muffler mount) just behind swingarm pivot.

    Compared to your Watsonian the Ural has a longer hack baseframe and that's why you see a 'V'-shape of twin bars running to the lower rear mount. If you obtain a subframe for your tug -- your lower rear mount may be a lot different from this!

    Don't neglect a good steering damper (visible under LH Front indicator) which is often attached to the Upper Front Mounting bar.

    I would use a full subframe similar to what Vernon spoke of and probably switch the watsonian mounts to more 'conventional' uppers rather than the swan neck type system that Watsonian seems to prefer.
    Just my opnion of course. Nothing really wrong with the swan neck system of course as it is obvioulsy time proven.
