New Desert/Enduro Gas Tank for the SE950R

    As many of you already know, I've been tooling up to build a midsized fuel tank for our beloved KTM Super Enduros. After many requests, I now have the final design completed, and tooling is being manufactured. Due to the limited production of this tank, we will be pre-selling these units and building specifically to order. Delivery should be in approx. 10 weeks from today.

    Here's a few details:

    • Built upon the 950SM design
    • Uses either standard or gel filled SM 950 seat (not included)
    • Approx. capacity is 5.6 US gallons (125-150 mile range)
    • Requires an optional IMS dry-break or dry-break cap adapter
    • All mounting hardware will be included... seat, cap and vent are options which we will have available to purchase
    • We will be offering these units in Black or Natural (translucent)
    • You will re-use your petcocks and front seat post
    • You will also need slightly longer fuel lines which will not be included
    I'm sure that I've forgotten a few details, but that's pretty much everything in a nutshell. Price will be $699.00 plus shipping and any applicable taxes. We will not be carrying an inventory, so you'll need to place your order so we can build it for you.

    What's the tank made of?
    When you pull the seat off can you see the air box or does the tank cove the air box like the original Sm tank?

    Crosslinked Polyethylene just like the original tank. And yes, just like the SM tank this one also is closed in the back half. This is needed to provide support for the back half, and allows the tank to feature a 1 bolt retention system. When combined with quick release fuel line connectors, you can pull the entire tank in less than two minutes...

    Was just talking about the need for a mid-sized (larger than stock, smaller than the Safari) tank today...

    Questions:
    1: you mentioned the tank was built from the same materials as the original. Is it the same thickness as well ? (hoping its as strong or stronger as the stock tank)
    2: whats the width at the knee position, and where the inside of the thigh would be (farthest rear point) ?
    3: standard (plastic) tank cap is included, or... ?
    4: as airflow is so critical to the rad, how's the position/width of the tank (in that area) compared to the stocker ?
    5: does the fuel pump mount in the same place ? and the horn ?

    - Can you talk a little more about how the tank is secured, bolted on ?
    - Can we get a pic of the radiator area (from the front), and ideally one of the underside of the tank ?

    We have the ability to mold the tank as thick or thin as desired. We're shooting for slightly thinner than stock as the OEM tank is as much as a half inch thick in places. Trust that this tank will be plenty strong.


    2: whats the width at the knee position, and where the inside of the thigh would be (farthest rear point) ?

    The section between your knees is similar to the stocker, but transitions better from the seat on down. For the tall rider I've kept the profile narrow much further forward than stock as can be seen in the pictures above.


    3: standard (plastic) tank cap is included, or... ?

    A cap option needs to be selected from the ones listed above.


    4: as airflow is so critical to the rad, how's the position/width of the tank (in that area) compared to the stocker ?

    KTM engineered this part so air flow is not a problem.


    5: does the fuel pump mount in the same place ? and the horn ?

    Fuel pump goes in the stock location. Thread inserts are in place for the fuel sender, but if you no longer use the stock (useless) sender we can leave the hole unopened. The horn location has been eliminated to increase fuel storage.

    6: Can you talk a little more about how the tank is secured, bolted on ?

    Rubber coated bushings support the nose and lower sections of both sides. Rubber pads support the tank resting on the upper rear frame tubes. And lastly there is a single bolt the secures the rear of the tank at the very back just below the seat. This mounting design is very similar to KTM's dirt bikes.

    little question :
    - no bolt fixation in the front tank , only in the rear ?
    -can you post more pictures for all fixations (rubber , frame ,...)
    -possible to send in France

    Yes. We can go as much as 25% thicker. This option would only be $75...

    Nice work, that looks amazing... I'd love a different tank option for the 990, I never understood why it's not a little wider at the top to allow for more fuel. Seems like it would have bee a small compromise. I love what you did with this design though.

    A couple of things for clarity.

    1. This will not work with the stock seat?

    2. This make it the same as a SM for air filter purposes?

    I just finished my custom seat then ordered the CPR air filter for the SE and if this changes all of that........... not sure I can do it.

    The stock Super Enduro seat will not fit... completely different shapes. On the plus side the stock seat sux ass. The SM seat not only transitions better between your legs, it is much more comfortable. Plus the Gel version is only $118 from Munn's!

    The tank will clear a stock SE filter housing as well as a Motohooligan. Not sure about the CPR unit as I don't run one. I'll reach out to Chris Parker at CPR and see if I can grab one for testing. He's only 15 minutes from my shop.


    I've just added 5 additional pix to the original post to better display the single mounting bolt design and the seat/tank relationship...

    what kind of repair service your offering if we blow it up? or if it leaks at petcocks? this is 100% going to happen?
    how soon till you have a model that you can test?

    wonder if I can offload my safari quick... I like the looks and the size is perfect.

    No repair, just replacement. I'm including a full one year replacement warranty covering any defects in materials or craftsmanship.

    You're on your own. This tank was designed without compromise for desert/enduro riding. But I'm sure you can find a suitable location either behind the headlight mask or elsewhere on the frame.

    Ordered mine and super excited about it. I can live without a horn and it bothers me that much I'll figure something out. Just look at it like more weight off the bike. How much longer do fuel lines need to be and do you have a good source for the quick disconnects? Thanks again Ken!
