    I don't have a dongle. (That doesn't sound right.)

Also, my iPhone is connected via BT. I'd prefer to keep it that way. And there is a line in - I should be able to use that.

I agree - it would be nice if it was selectable. But it wouldn't be that much of a problem if it wasn't. It would just sound like the announcement system in airports and train stations that ding, then give a message.

It could even be a language specifically including that bell or gong, or whatever it was that woke the audio channel.

I can probably create a language doing what I need with Garmin Voice Studio.

Have you tried deleting the bad Shortcut and redoing it?

    Yes I did.
I know it has someting to do with the original profiles because, shortcuts from other original profiles also didnt work and shortcuts of profiles based on the original files do work.
I also tried giving them other names.

    Cheers,

    Peter

I don't have any shortcuts to "original Profiles" but I just created one and it works just fine. I can call it from a custom Profile and from another original Profile.

What software version are you using?

So largely on the strength of this thread I just purchased a Montana 600 and AMPS rugged mount (from GPSCity).

    1. Mount was defective (security screw not working). Got that replaced. Got CN maps installed after a minor hassle.

    2. After a week on the phone with Garmin we conclude the Montana 600 is ALSO defective (powers off randomly and won't calculate routes properly).

I was hoping to get this whole setup working before an upcoming trip...no way now. The "beta tester" comments I've read have taken on a new meaning...

PS. Sure wish Apple would come up with some GPS offerings...I've really had it with Garmin.

When you say "it doesn't work" just exactly what does it do?

Try this, create a new Shortcut and the only thing it does is call a Profile (original, say, Classic). Add that Shortcut to one of the original Profile Main Menu's and to one of your customer Profiles. Does that Shortcut work?

I just tried as you discribed.
The new shortcut (to Classic) does not work in an original profile and neither in the custom profile...

    Cheers,

    Peter

When you say it doesn't work, what is it doing - or not doing?

One more thing, can you use the Change Profile app to change Profiles?

When I push on the shortcut, the screen gives a short freeze/flickr and than nothing happens, it doesn't go to the other profile.

Yes I can change the profiles and the changes are applied to the profile (at least to the custom ones).

    Cheers,

    Peter

If it were me I would do a Master Reset. If that doesn't solve the problem, I would reinstall v4.20 using WebUpdater.

    Hope that helps.

After reading the manual I found out that the Scala G4's MP3/Aux (Wired) circuit works this way:

"Any other audio connection will automatically mute the MP3 Player. The audio signal will return only when the G4 is once again in Standby mode."

I just need to be sure no other channel is active if I want to hear the audio from the Montana through the wired connection.

So it sounds like the mp3/aux input is the lowest priority then. I guess that makes since since the G4 is really a wireless device that they added a wired input to. Of course the downside in this case is if you are listing to music over Bluetooth (iPhone) then as you have discovered you will miss the beginning of the GPS prompts.

Wow.....I did not know they had that. Very interesting.

It does not list the Montana as a compatible device. Do you think it could still be used to create voices for the Montana?

I'm sure the voices could be used with the Montana. But it'd be easy enough to download and run the program, then send a voice to the gps and test it.

Edit: The Montana does support custom voices - just sent a sample called "Amy Elk" I found on the web. It does give voice commands when I simulate navigation.

Cool.....I think I'll have to play with voices when I have time.

Mine has done exactly that since about a month after I got it. No, it is not a security screw, that's for sure but it was handy to help ensure that the Montana wouldn't fall out of the cradle during a rough ride. I haven't bothered getting another mount because it would probably just do the same thing.

4500 posts and over 200 pages? Well that alone says a lot. This thread has been very helpful to some and a few have been fantastic contributors. Some others, like me are not particularly impressed with it. If Garmin would at least provide proper documentation and stop releasing buggy units to the market place, you would not need over 200 pages of beta testing stories and the wisdom of a few who actually have the patience, time and interest to find resolutions, then inform and help others.

Perhaps at a $200 price point one could expect that but not at $800. Just sayin.
