Hey Mike, Welcome to the forum.

I'm in a similar situation. I just brought my 1190 R home last Wednesday. The Stealership told me to come back in 1000km for the first service. I asked about a short interval for the first 50 km. They said no, don't worry about it, but after seeing various inmate posts about junk in the oil after the first oilchange, I bought a couple oil filters when I picked up the bike. I didn't get any oil because of the price and I thought there would be something that has Motorx specs.

I know there is an oil thread here somewhere.

I too am looking for an alternative.

whatever brand you choose Mike, (you probably know this), stay away from synthetic during break in period.

I don't get it. You spend over $18,000 on your new pride and joy, and then object to paying $30 on Motorex oil at the first service, preferring to use cheaper oil and invalidate the warranty ... does that make sense?

Consumer law may be different in CA but in the US the mfg can only void the warranty if they can prove the oil used was out of spec and caused a failure.

Motorex POWER SYNT 4T 10W/50 meets the JASO MA T903:2006; API SM, SL, SJ, SH, SG specs. As long as you use an oil that meets or exceeds these
    specs you should be ok.

The manual for my 990 adventure calls out the Motorex oil as an example, but says OR equivalent. Then lists the oil spec. In addition my KTM dealer here in Norway use Motul…

The brand myth is just som stuff left over from KTM advertising Motorex.

Use whatever oil you want as long as it follows the correct spec. Also as mentioned: The engine should run on mineral oil the first 1000 kms so the piston rings seat properly. At least that was what the dealer told me…

That's what I thought I pick the bike up on Fri I will go through the owners manual and more then likely run amsoil 10/40 after break in
