Yeah, I'm doing it. I have wanted to see the USS Texas since high school, and doing it next year. Also want to see other historic sites in the area, and probably the 'Bama in Mobile Bay. So...good and bad routes? Things to see (or avoid) in La Porte?

It will be me on a Burgman or a Sportster, my wife on a Pacific Coast.

If you happen to like military aviation -the Pensacola museum is a VG one and not so far from Mobile, AL.

Yeah, doing that. Plan has changed a bit now. Plan is to...

Ride south to Virginia, 2 days. (Probably hammer-down on the highway, though US301 through Delaware and Maryland and over the Chesapeake is likely, to avoid the high-grade clusterfuck that is Baltimore and Washington.) Since making the train by 2pm from home is unlikely, we won't try.
    Auto Train to FL. (Overnight.)
Ride to Panama City, then Pensacola and Mobile. (Probably 3 days combined.)
Ride to La Porte. 1 or 2 days, weather dependent. (~500 miles)
Take a week to ride home.

A little out of the way, but if you can make it up tp Birmingham, The Barber museum is not to be missed.

Perhaps...but I'm going more for military history than racing history this time. (We'll hit the Nimitz Museum in Fredricksburg, TX if we have time.)

I visited La Porte last January and it was great. In addition to the WWI dreadnaught USS Texas make sure to visit San Jacinto battlefield right across the field. Great views from the park obelisk. While in the area we also visited the Johnson Space Ctr. and Galveston. Took the Bolivar Peninsula back to Houston by ferry from Galveston. Neat historical coastal battery to visit there.

Thought this at the battlefield was pretty ironic...Mexico should have built a wall!
