One of the reasons might be that not everyone will ride at the same pace. Someone may want to spend extra time in one location or another and will therefore need to 'cut-up' the BDR route to suite their particular needs.

Routes are normally limited to 500 points. If you break it down to 7 sections the route is very detailed (3500 points).
Just like it is here .... http://www.backcountrydiscoveryroutes.com/NMBDR
But there is no way on the web site to download the 7 sections......

I have had to do this to be able to follow the UTAH, Colorado, and New Mexico Backcountry Discovery Routes using my 60CSX and using my IHIKEGPS Iphone app.

If you want to look at the detailed route on Google Earth you have to break it up into the 7 sections that I have linked here. Enjoy.

Actuially, I plan all of my rides in Furkot.com. Importing the NMGDR unabridged edition is no problem at all and I don't need to use Google Earth since I can easily select from Street Map, Sat View and Terrain map.

Exporting gives me high point count Tracks for each of my Day segments and the Alternate Tracks for each Day.

Yes, The IHIKEGPS app I use on my Iphone separates the NMBDR unabridged files also (splits all the sections out).
And the free Garmin Base Camp program does the same also...

But for a newbie when you see all of the sections on the web site, then upload, the 2 files on the upload can be a bit confusing.

Also as a note the unabridged can't be uploaded to Google earth.

If you load the composite files from the website into Basecamp or Mapsource you can see everything in Google Earth at the same time, including the side tracks.

Thanks for posting these tracks - I did the TAT in 2010 and that tiny little piece of NM was really pretty - one day I have to return and explore
