This was my first ride overnight camping. The weather was perfect. This shot is from the second day but I thought I should open with a picture of my loaded ride.

I left from Maryland at about 5 am to beat the 4 hour long rush hour. I also didn't take any pictures till I was in West Virginia since it was far away and I wanted to make sure I could get there. It took me nine hours to get to Rays Campround. Got set up and relaxed for awhile.

Later the same day I rode to the bridge, which was my goal for the day.
I found a good parking space in the shade. Other riders have the same idea.

This motorhome pulled in. Not uncommon, but look whose driving.

Went to the visitor center then took the long deck like staircase down to the overlook. Very nice spot.

If you were traveling you could easily miss the bridge as it's quite uneventful as you drive over it. So I wanted to go to the old bridge down below seen here.

Riding down a slow, 1 lane, 1way road with lots of switchbacks.
    This is about halfway down.

    Here is the old bridge.

    Railroad runs along the river.

    Up river from the bridge.

It seems that there is always a shot that defines the trip.
It's also the money shot. The one for the magazines.
    The New River Gorge Bridge.

I hung out here for quite awhile. This is a cool shot as the light was fading.

I set the GPS for the shortest route to Thornburg Va. The shortest route is not the fastest route.
3 or 4 hundred miles from the next destination and I'm riding on roads like these.
Takes a long time but I'm not in hurry and interstates are boring.

    This town is called Marlinton.

This shot included for the road sign.

Here is the Sutton Dam, actually from the first day.

    Flyfishing below the dam.

Also the first day near Seneca Rocks.

OK, back in order. The road to and from Shenandoah Mountain is fast with lots of turns.
Took a break at the top.

This is the Shenandoah Valley. I left the fill flash on so the camera died after just 187 pictures.

From here I went to my families campground property at Indian acres in Thornburg Va.
Several hours later by the way.
I met a couple of sister in-laws and their families there. Next day I rode up I-95 (no good shots
    here anyway) to home.
    Thanks for looking.

Great area to explore. I stayed at Ray's last year, clean and very inexpensive too. The gas station at the main highway has good chow and the little Chamber/Visitor Center closer to the bridge had excellent maps for motorcyclists to make several long loops in all directions. Nice people and great riding.

    Thanks for the photos!

    Cheers.

The New River Gorge was on my list last year but I didn't make it. It's on the list again this year. WV is a great state to ride. Nice pics, thanks for sharing 'em.

Thanks GS Lady. Rays Campground was nice. At first I was worried because when I arrived there was a large group at the front that was celebrating there 30 year class reunion. I left and came back some hours later to find a Boy Scout troop across the street. I thought "no sleep tonight", but it was no problem. The boys were quieter than the partying adults but by 11 pm, all was quiet.
In all honesty, I felt better with people around. Rather than a deserted place.
Rays also has nice warm private showers. Oh and it was 8 dollars per night.
The temperature got just to the cool side.
The whole thing was nearly perfect. [IMG]

I ran through that area on my return from a ride to DC. I was very pleased with the area. Good to post it so more ADV'ers know and can add it to their bucket list. Thanks for the post.

I discovered Rays' Campground In Hico, WVa. a few years ago- always polite, always clean, ok showers, can't beat the deal for the price of a place to put your tent
