New (to Me) 2000 Kawasaki W650

    Emblems are attached with industrial strength mounting tape. Carefully heat tank and emblem with heat gun and pull. Some have used fishing line or dental floss to help cut through the tape. You will probably spend some time removing the residue after removing the emblem. Glad you're getting it back together. Good luck.

    Not sure much is to be gained by doing the needles or messing with jet kits, etc., unless one increases flow in exhaust and intake. On the other hand the idle screws are worth doing IMHO.

    I agree but some like to tinker. I'm happy with my Ws performance.

    I shimmed the needles and drilled out the caps and screwed out the idle mixture screws not for performance, but just for "rideability".

    The changes seemed to make it a little less lean, which resulted in initially staying lit better when extremely cold, and quicker warm up.

    Flying to Vegas on Friday to pick up a W and ride it back.

    Nice and clean, 14.8k miles. Very reminiscent of one of my favorite old bikes in the 70's, an XS650D.

    nope....flea market.

    He mentioned putting the bike on ebay in his ad and it got nuked.
    Lives about a mile from my old place in Vegas (Henderson)


    Has Norman Hyde "M" bars mounted upside down in the pics - he's putting the oem bars on, I may put the "M" bars back on right side up when I get back - I'll have to see what I like best.

    Has oem mirrors and taillight too, but not turn signals.

    That is a nice and clean 2000 W. Those bars look nice with the high bar cables(?).

    He'd just done a valve adjustment and put in a new clutch with HD springs.
    The original clutch turned out to be fine, just felt a little funky - and that went away with the new clutch & springs.

    I was happy to hear it uses the same 7.48 shims as my TE 310...but it won't need any for a while.

    Do some reading here and you'll find that year rear fender was weak, tended to crack.

    If you put the rear turn signals back on, suggest you mount them in the rear reflector holes rather than back on the rear fender to keep the weight off.

    Howdy all -

    I've done a google search and come up empty handed. Does anyone know the alternator output of the W650? I'd like to run a Gerbing jacket and gloves. Thanks!

    I run both on my '01 with no problem. Don't know the actual output though.

    In my factory Kawasaki W650 service manual on page General information page 1-10 it states :

    Alternator: Type Three-phase AC
    Rated Output
    18 A-14 V @7 500 r/min (rpm)

    A Gerbing's jacket/liner uses 6.4 amps/77 watts at max--I've hardly ever been able to crank mine up to max even on a naked bike.

    I'd have to ask my son, a real avionics electrician, but I believe the watts output of the alternator will be about 12 x 18 = or about 216 watts.

    Headlight on bright about 60 watts, then add up the tail light, some guesstimates for the turnsignal/brakes (on only intermittently) and whatever you think the ignition might take.

    So I thought about that for a while, what's left of my pea brain went up in smoke, and I just put on the liner and electric gloves and went for a ride . . . :lol3

    Seriously, I've used both the Gerbing's liner and gloves on the Dub, but NOT at full power . . . I also crank them back down at stoplights.

    No problems so far.
