1. what size is that tire, please?
2. are there options for "better" tires?
i know that few manufacturers make tires in that size (i suppose)
but... just wondering about "upgrading" the rubber, if that is something which is possible

While the new wheel is significantly BETTER, please don't stop the quest to find a WIRE WHEEL for the sidecar and REAR wheel. I've scoured the Internet for a wire wheel, and have come CLOSE, but no cigar!
I think the answer may be to look at having an appropriate rim laced to a stock hub if possible. Poor picture but this one is on an old 650 Yamaha. Barry

Do you know the weight of that wheel?
Also, is the backside of the wheel machined and polished as well, or is it still in the as-cast finish?
Finally, is it clear-coated, or will it require frequent polishing to maintain?

That really doesn't give much information about the wheels.
I don't see any info about the weight, backside finishing, etc...
And at that price, I am guessing that there is no clearcoating.
Thanks for the reminder. I've been meaning to weigh these wheels for about two months now. Just put them on the digital scale and also the stock wheel, both with tires on of course. Stock 1200 GS wheel/tire came out at 27 1/2 lbs. The new automotive wheel/tire came out at 30 1/4. Closer even than I thought it would be. A difference of 2 3/4 lbs.
As far as I can see there is no clearcoat on the wheel. In a strictly street application I might be more inclined to use a clearcoated wheel. My past experience with clearcoated aluminum, starting with 60's motorcycles up to present, has not been good. Part of this might be because I tend to keep my bikes a long time and they get used harder than most. I started restoration of a 74 Moto-Guzzi Eldorado a couple of years ago. I had the rear wheel torn apart and the hub bead blasted and clear coated and reassembled the wheel. It has been on the shelf for a while now waiting to be put back on. Recently I took it down off of the shelf only to discover moisture has begun to seep under the coating and I'm back to square one. The issue is that clearcoating chips easily, specially if used on gravel roads. It looks awesome on a new bike but a couple years later not so good.
Aluminum wheels are not hard to maintain with all the products available to do this now. For those wanting a more show than go finish a wheel without clearcoat will probably require a proper polishing once a year.
The back sides of automotive wheels are never polished like the front for obvious reasons. When used on a motorcycle with sidecar, for the most part, the same applies. I am including a picture of one recently installed on a 1200 GS. Sorry for the picture quality. Only have my little pocket camera handy today. This picture shows the back side of the wheel without the saddle bags or sidecar in place. Actually, even in this more open situation the brake rotor, swing arm and the small fender piece pretty well cover it up anyway. Once the bags and sidecar are in place it won't show at all.
