Hello all you crazy riders! I have been lurking in the shadows reading all your post and decided to by a Big Red Pig and join in on the fun. Its been a long time since I rode MX or Streetbikes for that matter but I am very excited about getting back into it. Some questions first:

Any suggestions on Riding gear? I want to ride trails and stuff and would like something a bit less wild than the true MX gear but still provides ultimate safety. I will be riding the bike on the "oil" so would like something that could protect me there as well.

When are we going riding? Can't wait to do a bit of exploring...In the winter I spend some time in Booger County so I am fairly familiar with the area but want to see what you guys have in mind.

I hope to be able to pick my bike up before this weekend and get a few miles on her. She is an 01 xr650l that looks showroom new. The guy took amazing care of it and is only selling it becuse it is to tall for him. Not a problem for me...6'4, so it fits great.

Can't wait to meet some of you guys and run some trails.

MX boots are probably the best..I got a pair of MSR from Bill Eddys for just a lil over $100..added some $30 knees pads..have a Olympia Hi Viz jacket with armor in it (shoulder, elbo, back pads)..got that for abt 250..but if you invest in some elbow pads and find a good used chest protector (check out pawn shops)..you'd be good I think..be creative and you can also be a little thrifty..but when it comes down to it, money buys protection and the more money you spend on it, the better the protection..so get with it and lets go ridin!!..welcome to the forum btw..:D

Thanks for the welcoming! Doc, I will check out Bill Eddy's and see what I come up with. Thrifty is my game but I want to be as safe as possible too! Yeah, I was reading where you live and we are very close. I drive through Wesley about twice a week. I manage Titan Propane in Springdale and Huntsville so I am always out and about....

Thanks hoodlums....See you on the trail...

Have the Dave's Carbs Mod been done yet? This, an air filter and a WhiteBros pipe will net you some serious tourque and drivabilty. If the carb is stock, you will need new jets ASAP. You can kinda bank on your altitude being 500-1600 ft. But the Pig is lean in stock form. Add an UNI filter and a pipe and she is real lean.

Cant remember if the 01's had Air Injection Systme (AIS) or not. Removing it doesnt really net any power gains, but the constant exhaust pop is annoying as hell.

Questions, just ask, I have the shop manual, wiring diagrams, all kinds of stuff.

6'4". How heavy are you, and how much gear do you plan on carrying?
I resprung mine cause I carry some gear, and ride it a pinch more aggressively than your typical dual sporter.

Well, that is cool Doc. Glad to know your part of the fold! If you have been in the Springdale office then more than likely I have seen ya. Usually there most everyday unless I am, er, traveling, uh, playing hookie, uh I mean visiting with customers...

    Ripper,

The bike is bone yard stock. It looks just like it did when it rolled of the showroom floor in 01. I have heard about those mods and am very interested in doing them. Are the carb mods as trustworthy as factory? I read where you have to do the drilling and stuff yourself which is not a problem as I have a garage full of tools and have done that kind of stuff my whole like. Just wanted to know if a different carb would get the same effect....
