Quoted from my end-of-june ride report:

No gas in Tres Piedras. A person in Tres Piedras said there's gas 60 miles west or 30 miles east or 30 miles north (Antonito, CO). I decided to gas up in Antonito and do the last segment of this section North-to-South. Get to Antonito - no gas. One station is permanently closed while the second only opens when the owner buys gas which according to a local, isn't very often. She suggested going to (closer 9 miles away) Manassa or further (14 miles away) La Jara. I went to Manassa but there was a sign up saying closed today. I drove to La Jara which had a real, modern series of pumps and convenience store (ate some junk food and calmed down).

I don't know the status as of today but there is fuel about 5-10 miles north of Antonio.

No gas in Antonito. 15 miles north of Antonito in La Jara there is gas.

Thanks, we will plan on LaJara. I remembered that gas in Antonito was unlikely so sounds like we get another 30 miles of pavement. We can handle that.

I think the next gas south on the BDR is Abiquiu?

Quoted from my end-of-june NMBDR ride report:

There's neat couple miles of gravel road (county road 162) which follows the Rio Chama River past the dam. Lots of fun but don't forget to go off route and into Abiquiu for gas. I ate at a great breakfast at Abiquiu Cafe (part of the Abiquiu Inn) which is just down the road from the gas.

Well, as often happens to me, we need to delay our start for a few days so with a little luck we will be on the road before the weekend.

But we're both retired so schedule for us is mostly just whenever we can, start.

Very deep mud holes for a quarter of a mile....north of El Rito!!! ( Cuba to end section. ) We had to bail off route and go west to hit the highway. this section is aspen forest ... so it's not groomed gravel.

Rode from Grants north on Sept 19 and 20th on GSA. Trail dry, sand not an issue. Could see mud tracks on the Ranch roads and SWA from very recent past, looked nasty. Lots of hunters on the northern section, most prime primitive camping spots taken. Good food in Cuba, camped at Hopewell FS CG on Hwy 64.

Our forecast is for rain to be tapering off by Saturday, with lowered chances going into next week.

Ok. Thanx. We are coming no matter what. Bikes already on their way.

We may start at section 2. Are the southern sections pure dirt or is it sand and rock?

the southern most section is sand, when you get up on the forest road from near Queen it is mostly gravel, small rocks and should be okay even wet. From Weed on northward, it may be a little slick===mud on rocks

Your counsel is priceless. Thank you! We were considering cutting out section one. Is it worth it?
